Time to buy a new computer

Hi all,
I’ve reached that stage where I think I’m going to have to buy a new computer. To set the picture, I’m currently using a 6 year old Dell XPS M1530 with 4GB RAM. I use it mostly for photography, scuba diving and web browsing. I upated to Wndows 7 about a year ago. I’m currently using Photoshop Elements 10, Photomatix Pro for my photography and it is very very slow indeed. Recently, it has been crashing and freezing a lot.
I’ve also started getting into underwater video recently and am hoping to start doing some editing.
The options I’m looking at are as follows:
1) Apple Macbook Pro – nice piece of kit but very expensive and I’m not sure its worth it.
2) New laptop – 15″ screen with at least 8GB RAM.
3) the double whammy. Buy a new desktop system for the house and most of the editing, etc. In addition, buy a 10″ laptop with 1GB and a small hard drive for when I’m travelling (which is a fair bit). This will allow me to download to the netbook and sync back to the desktop when I get home.
I’m not married to a PC or Mac but not sure which is the best option. The Macs are lovely machines but very expensive.
Any opinions would be welcome.
danjoParticipantMac all the way…. you can get a good second hand one for reasonable money
trancemanMemberDesktop plus a laptop – the best you can do. Desktops are very easy to upgrade in future instead of buying a new laptop again. I also would also look into SSD hard drive – they are fantastic and WAY faster than normal HDD.
IsabellaParticipantid also go for mac if you can afford it – the monitors are much better quality, they’re far less prone to virus’ and ink my experience if you look after them they perform far better for far longer
SteveDParticipantPersonally I would go for a Dell XPS desktop, with a specialist photography monitor. The reality is that most screens sold as part of a consumer product are for entertainment, and are very bright and colourful.
Search online for Dell voucher codes and you can save huge chunks. I saved a member here several hundred euros on his new Dell by doing just that. You can then put the saving into a great screen, or things like a solid state drive as suggested.
I’m an Apple fan, but I would never buy one of their desktop models over a windows based machine. Windows 7 is a fantastic system, and the power/price ratio on a Dell XPS will be much more in your favour.
