Times Square & Chair
-
wirepicParticipant
Another from my recent trip to NYC.
I went up to Times Square having been told “Oh, you have to see Times Square!”. I was disappointed. For a start there’s no square. It’s really just a crossroads with a load of electronic bill boards. I suppose in years past this has some attraction but in these days when people have tellys in their living room taking up one whole wall, I think it has lost some of it’s appeal.
I thought I’d take a photo anyway just to say I’d been there. I thought it would be a routine street shot at night. But then along came this chair and just sat there. Everyone just walked by and in the few minutes I was taking photos no-one sat on it.
I think it sums up New York. Everyone is so busy going about their business they don’t have time to sit and relax.
b318ispParticipantLiam2673ParticipantAs mentioned, an interesting take.
My questions are
(i) Did you put the chair there yourself?
(ii) what is the beer in the ad? (and this one open to anyone).I’d agree re Times Square being underwhelming for a world famous location, a bit reminiscent of Picadilly Circus in that respect.
I’d say for sheer blast of Neon, Hong Kong can’t be beat…..though maybe MartinO’C might have something to say about that.
I’m not sure I’d sit there myself, even if I did feel like a rest, it looks a bit exposed.
wirepicParticipantTo answer your questions:
i) The chair was there when I arrived your honour. I didn’t touch it! Actually just behind me were a load of tables and chairs. Someone had obviously pulled this one out to be apart “from the madding crowd”.
ii) The beer is Corona Light. Not to be recommended. No, definitely not to be recommended. I get a cold shiver even thinking about it.
Thanks for the comments.
DeeboParticipantGood take on a much shot location. The static chair works great with the hussle and bussle of the busy surroundings.
Have to say. I really liked Times Sq when I visited several years back. Well, the only dislike was the stench and the steam from the sewer pipes. Nasty
DeeproachMemberWhat a brilliant take on such an over photographed location. Really like this shot, and your story does it
Alan RossiterParticipantYeah, I like this one. Such a contrast and the centre of attention in a wonder of the world is a solitary chair. It’s an intelligent image.
If I were to say anything to alter it (your choice if it improves it) would be to add a little contrast to the buildings to harden them up a bit. It might bring them into the chair image and allow for a greater contrast with the manic people movement.
Alan.
Liam2673ParticipantApologies for being flippant earlier, I forgot to mention that I really like the photo…..it makes Times Square look more interesting than it actually is :-)
wirepicParticipantThanks for all the comments guys. I really do like this one myself.
I feel at last I’m beginning to notice things like this when I’m walking around. Before I probably would have moved the chair to get a “clean” shot of Times Square. This time I realised that the static chair against the moving people would make an interesting contrast.
