The Spire of Lloyd, Kells, Co. Meath.

Built in 1791, this 18th century folly in the form of a lightbouse was erected to the
memory of Sir Thomas Taylor, 1st Earl of Bective, by his son. The architect was Henry
Aaron Baker, stonecutter was a Mr Joseph Beck, and head mason Mr Owen McCabe.
It’s an interesting structure, and the 167 concrete stairs inside lead you to a rather
uninspiring view of the surrounding countryside. But as it stands on its own little summit,
it’s difficult to get an interesting photograph of it without a hot air balloon, a crane, or your
own personal fire truck. I’ve taken several shots over the past years I’ve been living in
Kells, and this is probably the best one I’ve managed so far…

I know this one, you can see it for miles around-
I suppose from further away against the sky with that fast long lens of yours would be an option-

    Or build yourself a kite-

I think you’ve done a very good job of capturing it Rob! I have past it many times – thanks for saving me the trouble of driving up to it to find out what its supposed to be :D

    John.

P.S. Oh and they’ve been flying hot air baloons around area for the last few weeks I’ve noticed, check out – http://www.balloonflights.ie/balloonflights-launch.php – it might be a little safer than building your own kite :D

    Terrific shot rob…

The one thing bothering me is the fence in the right foreground… I’d love to see it without it!

    cheers,

Thanks very much for all the comments folks…

Joseph, even further away is not much use as it’s too difficult to get a high
enough vantage point. As for the kite, brilliant link. Necessity being the mother
    of and all that…

Thanks for the hot air balloon suggestion John. That is something I’d love to try…

Sean, I’m truly flattered, even if you are just taking the piss…

Thanks Mick. Glad you like the conversion…

Beef, next time I’ll bring a pick-axe and sledge ;)

I went up and knocked it for you! :D

Only a quick edit so it’s rough and ready… Tis just a personal thing, but, it was distracting me. hope you don’t mind.

    Cheers,

    Tee hee.
Nice one beef. I presume you came over from Ardee with your
pick-axe, and not the whole way from Tipp? Clever edit…

Oops, must change location details… I’m commuting between Clonmel and Limerick these days, lived in Ardee for 2.5 years though… Again, really like that shot Rob, the more I look at it…

I’m looking at this again (about the 6th time) and it’s growing on me.
When you see a column from this angle it does look bigger though.

Seriously, I’m starting to like it quite a lot. I’m starting to see what
all the enthusiasm was about. The conversion is cracking too. Nice work
    Rob.

Thanks Pete. When you do eventually manage to make your way to Kells
I’ll try to organise the keys so you can venture to the top. Though knowing
you, you might prefer to climb the outside.
I wonder if this is the most landlocked lighthouse in the country?

    Rob.
