I found this package deal for a cannon 550d on ebay. Does this deal sound to good to be true or sounds about right for that price?

Hi Jon – Its not a great deal in my estimation. Those 2 extra lenses are 120% sure to be rubbish – and the 18-55 would not be great to start out with. £40 delivery is another consideration – as others may do it cheaper.

The 550D is an excellent serious amateur/semi pro camera – having nearly all the same features as the 7D – so don’t put poor glass in front of it. I did a lot of research on this model – but paid more and got the 7D instead – but it was a close call.

Here’s the current price on a 550D ‘body’ only – from reputable suppliers

My advice is to think medium term instead of getting this all -in-one package. Get the ‘Body’ only now – and perhaps the 50mm f/1.8 (approx €90) – then build a quality lens collection over time – and consider third party manufacturers (Sigma, Tokina, Tamron etc)

Maybe beg, steal or borrow a ‘kit’ lens for the moment as someone you know may have discarded one. They are also ultra cheap on eBay…as many upgrade pretty soon upon realising that they are not great.

I’d also ring Image Supply Systems in Dublin who sold me my 7D same price as those UK suppliers – and they offer a twice yearly free services (sensor clean, firmware updates etc) http://www.imagesupplysystems.com/. They will haggle for cash rather than credit card.

    hope this helps,

Agree with bren, good body with lot of useless no-name junk to increase the price of the whole kit. Especially the two extra “lenses” – I can´t imagine that someone could really use them with a DSLR.
