Honestly i think you have no real understanding of photography John. You come across as completely ignorant, uneducated and blind to what photo journalism is about. And the reasons why people take the photographs they do.
Also, if you dont like these photographs you better not turn on the news ever again – theres all kinds of real and horrible things going on out there.
Take a look at the work of James Nachtwey. Tell me if you find his work grotesque and intrusive.
Why thank you for such critcal analysis! It takes one to know one as they say!
No! I don’t find his work grotesque & intrusive. This is pure photographic journalism!
How it really should be. Not composed or contrived! Kevin Carters image for me is
one of the more powerful. This guy killed himself sometime later after taking this.
That to me is drama & telling the story… as it really is.

Go pick up a camera and take a few photos yourself rather than sitting on a forum giving an uninformed critique when all you’ve posted yourself is a cliché’d photo of a man and his dog.
There’s nothing morally wrong with my photos. End of story.
MarkKeymasterActually I do think its acceptable to photograph an Irish funeral (with permission of course)
There is a very famous and renowned Irish photographer called John Minihan who photographed a wake over 2 nights and 3 days and published a book as a result.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but a whole photographic genre can’t be dismissed in such a manner I’m afraid.
If tragedies were never photographed the world may never have believed that the many atrocities which have occurred over the past century ever happened. And if they did they’d soon be forgotten as our memories are short.

So do you think that it would be ok to photograph
an irish family funeral. Not a celebrities, just your
average run of the mill family next door?Wouldn’t that capture the raw emotion for people
not directly involved & you could then put them in
book form to give to the family!Look! enough of this. If ye think that this persons
photography deserves this much attention then so
be it. For me it’s contrived & banal!this photos are not your cup of tea, it’s fine by me. having different points of view is what makes us different.
how about different cultures where is absolutely normal to keep photos (printed in an album) of dead people (very closed relatives like brothers, sisters, mother, father) ? can you “blame” a nation for nor having taste in photography when that is part of their culture?btw, i see nothing wrong with these photos, some of them are very good, the one with the rose is a bit ” less valuable”
ANDYwithCAMERAParticipantYeah, I’m not too happy with that rose one (or most of them) now that I’m looking at them again, but sure that’s always the way.
miki gParticipantPersonally, I don’t think that the Kevin Carter shot or the fact that he took his own life afterwards is a great example of photojournalism at it’s best, but that’s just my opinion.
He was a great photographer, fair enough, and his images brought about change, but his images never really “moved” me emotionally. I didn’t connect with the story as such in this case. It was just another starving child amongst many other starving children & the fact that there was a vulture in the picture made no difference for me. A more powerful image for me would have been one taken of him leaving the child to die after getting his shot, as he IMO was worse than the vulture in this case.
This shot, to me (which is quiet dated now) was and still is a very powerful image & brought about change. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phan_Thi_Kim_Phuc” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
Not every image will affect everyone in the same way, and we are all entitled to our opinions. Some events move us, others don’t. That’s just a fact of life. But the fact that a photographer records what is happening before him / her doesn’t make it wrong, even if it does upset some of the people involved at the scene or the people who view the pictures.davedunneParticipantI like the one the with the woman and the dog.
I also keep coming back to the one with the boys with their arms around each other even though it is not perfectly composed (in my opinion).
I completely disagree with the sentiments of John17. James Nacthwey was mentioned above. His home page currently says
“I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated.”
I agree.

Look John, every single person involved in this thread has basically told you that you are wrong and very ignorant when it comes to what photo journalism is. i know you will not agree with that and your going to stand your ground, but im telling you for a fact, regardless of your ”opinion” that – you are 100% wrong.
and like a few others have noticed, all you do with the majority of your posts is say things like ”this isnt for me!” and a lot of ”!!!” this kind of nonsense.
lets see a portforlio of your journalistic work and other work so you can show us all how its really done – im willing to bet this wont happen and you will yet again be defiant and typicaly ‘old stock irish, head in the sand’ about this though.
your the type of person i havent come across on this board – as in, maybe this isnt the place for you.

The penny finally dropped. Well done!
ANDYwithCAMERAParticipantI meant I’m not happy with them from a technical point of view. Are you still here? I though trolls only came out at night.
robmgraMemberImagine what kind of a grown man spends his time trying to pick fights on a photography forum. John, seriously boy, fuck off would ya? or someone in charge ban this idiotic troll who contributes not one iota to this board other than to stir shit with other members.

NOOO!!! Don’t ban John17. I want to see what he comes out with next.
Okay, all banter aside, John, thanks for voicing your opinion, but I think you’ll agree, your opinion is not shared by the majority of people who commented on the photos. You’re entitled to your opinion nevertheless.
Do us a favour though, grab your 450D and go for a walk. Your opinion would carry more weight if your profile wasn’t so lacking in photos. Taking photos is far more enjoyable than giving out about them, so how about we both get on with enjoying taking photos?
