    Shameless self-promotion alert!

I have been doing a photography project about taking long exposure photographs (+4 minute exposures) from balconies at music venues around Dublin. Thought some of you might be interested in this …

I always wanted to photograph a moshpit with a tripod and long exposure… but I was always too lazy to bring a tripod with me.

Very nice Idea Hugh had a look through – you’re right the Vicar Street one does really lend itself to it because you can see the crowd, I also really like the Metal Worship one from the Button Factory, can almost see them throwing their heads to the floor!! Good work!

    Thanks for the comments guys.

MMX – yeah, exactly the same thought occurred to me. I was at a Melvins gig in the Village a few years back and was watching crowd-surfing from the balcony thinking “I wish I had brought a camera”. However it might not work as well as you might think with the long exposure. Photographing bands works because there is a certain regularity to their movements e.g. the singer’s face is in front of the microphone a lot of the time. This means that distinct forms emerge in the photograph. A crowd, particularly a moshing one (!), can just look like a indistinct blur …. you also have the problem of trying to balance the exposure between the stage and the crowd … stage tends to be WAY brighter ….

    KyeBrown – cheers!

Not if you photograph a circle pit. And if you do it on an open air festival, there´s no problem with exposure.
And once when I buy a really wide lens (fisheye, or 14mm if I decide to switch to Nikon) I want to take some photos while stage diving; just activate the “machine gun” mode, hold the camera and jump :D

PS: why from the balcony? Shoot from the stage.

Yeah, I’ve thought of the open air thing but it’s a whole different project and I’m not sure that visually the pictures would work well. It’s also a much more difficult one in logistical terms as rather than having a few gigs a week I can potentially go and photograph, there’s just a few a year. And they are not 15 minutes away from my house. Having said that, I’d give it a go if the opportunity arose. Similarly, shooting from the stage is trickier as it requires a whole new level of negotiation i.e. “I would like to stick a big-ass camera on a tripod on the stage while you are playing” as opposed to “I would like to stick a big-ass camera on the balcony and point it at you while you are playing”.

I love your photographing while stage-diving idea. You should tell me when you are going to do it and I will come along and photograph you doing it :-)

Well I think I´ll do it in Czech Republic where I know many organizers and bands for a long time so they let me do whatever I want. In Ireland I´ll be happy if they give me at least an ordinary photo pass.

    Hey Hugh,

I’ll have a read off the blog tonight – looks like it’ll be a good read.

Would you be able to embed some photos too though ? You’ll get more responses that way also (include a link to the blog
    too of course :) )
