I’m thinking of replacing my old and defunct desktop which I use for all types of computing. I want it to last for a while so I’m willing to spend a few bob. Presently I’m looking at the dell XPS 8300 which is coming in around 900 euro without a monitor. If anyone could recommend a decent PC for similar money I would be delighted.

Not sure of your exact needs, but for general use and Lightroom & other assorted image editing programs, I find my iMac a pleasure to use. I bought a 20″ model back in ’08 for a grand, and have been enjoying hassle-free computing since.
In any case, just an alternate option, and fwiw the machine I use is a dual core 2ghz machine with 4gb of ram, which I find sufficient for most things, or rather have not felt the need to upgrade for efficiency reasons.
Whatever machine you end up with, enjoy :)
