Traveling to Ireland
-
PatEisenParticipant
I’m new to this forum, and hope that this is a good place for my many questions. I am an American photographer and am traveling to Ireland for the very first time. In fact, it’s my first trip outside of the U.S. I hope to photograph ruins (Muckross Abbey in particular) but don’t want to miss any hidden gems. My age prohibits strenuous hikes, but I can handle long, easy walks. Any travel advice (hotels vs bed & breakfast, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.
I understand that Spring in Ireland is in March? Is it a good time for photography?
paulParticipantHopefully you will have a great visit.
Killarney is beautiful. So much to see. Dingle is close too. Well worth a visit. Then you could head up to Limerick, Bunraty Castle, out to Clare, along the Cliffs of Moher, and then up to Galway.
Hotels can be cheap. Prices are generally reasonable. Shop around though.
With the weather in Ireland, you just never can tell what it will be like. March could be sunny and beautiful, or rainy and cold. There is no way to tell until you get here. But, the weather only adds to the atmosphere.
MartinParticipantThe whole west coast of Ireland is great to photograph. You mention Muckross Abbey which is in County Kerry, there’s lots to photograph around there. Try to get out to at least one of the Islands, there boats out to the main ones.
You said you want to photograph ruins. There are lots of them in Ireland. I would recommend doing some research before you go though. Some of the ruins you will find easy enough but others you would need to do some research on to find them.
Have a look at the work by Simon Marsden, he did allot of work in Ireland photographing ruins, link to the web site below
