Tree – first shoot in RAW format

Decided to try shooting in RAW format for a change. Saw this big old tree and thought it would be worth a shot:
All comments welcome!
DeeboParticipantNice shot m8.
I shot the same in normal mode and skies were blown. The RAW defo made the difference.Dee
RodcunhaParticipantGreat shot Sgt Major, I really like the angle and also a good exposure, I would though crop a bit from the left hand side as there is a large branch there that is a bit distracting.
Deebo
Sorry to disapoint you Deebo, it is actually not a matter of shooting raw that will make it different.
Raw gives you more flexibility so if you overexpose or underexpose (a small bit) your shots you can save them on the raw processing tool, though if your highlights are fully blown or shaddows very under exposed, there is no raw that will save you. The key is basicly the metereing, I don’t know but this might have been taken with matrix metering and the camera would have used the whole scene to calculate exposure, while you could have shot in spot metering and have selected the tree branch that is in shaddow to measure the exposure therefore blowing the highlights in the sky. This is only a example, hope it helps.
Cheers Rod.
Sgt_MajorMemberThanks Rod, I had considered cropping the left, but wasnt sure.
Thanks for the comments.
PixelleMemberMadra RuaParticipantLove the shot. Great perspective.
Composition spot on. From the roots to, almost, the tiniest branches. The image fills the frame perfectly.
Pity about the branch on the left, but I wouldn’t crop. It would disturb the balance of the compsition.
Well done with the exposure.Sgt_MajorMemberPeteTheBlokeMemberSmashing angle. I like this shot a lot. As Rod says, the left hand branch is intrusive, but cropping might ruin the balance of the photo.
Well done.
RobMemberFantastic exposure. Just checked the EXIF and I see that this was spot
metered too. As was already mentioned, slight shame about that
intruding branch, but hey, nothing’s perfect. Great shot.Rob.
Sgt_MajorMemberI would have loved to be able to get the whole thing in, there was another 4feet odd of roots on show, but I was already laying on my back with my head against the bank to get that and at present 18mm is as low as I can go.
Noely FParticipantGreat sense of perspective, a real frame filler of a tree  Nice shot.
