I think my exact words were ~nasty mean old man~

That is one great self portrait!
I am not sure it does justice to ~nasty mean old~…it’s kinda sophisticated and classy.

How did you set that up Rob? It’s incredibly sharp and your eyes are outstanding!

Was this outdoors? The light is wonderful!

    No, definately not sexy!!

Although it wouldn’t look out of place in a panoramic with Clink Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef. I’d agree, it’s a nice piece of work and if I saw this sticking out of a Landrover window with a camera I’d definately call the Guards.

Any input on your technique Rob??

    Thanks all, glad you like.

As to how I did it, here’s a fairly detailed run down…

Decided to try experimenting last night in my kitchen. No flash, just
bare ceiling bulbs, one either end of the room. I recently repainted this room,
the top half of it white, telling my beloved Reets that it would be so much brighter
and easier to keep, but really so I could set my white balance for whatever
light I might have in the room at any time of day ;).

So, set my white balance, placed the camera on a pile of books at eye level on the kitchen
table and within arm’s reach (I don’t own a remote control), and began experimenting.
Settled on an exposure of 1/6s f/3.3 at 40.0mm iso100

I sat at an angle with one 150 watt bulb overhead and slightly behind me and to my left,
and another 100 watt bulb about eight feet away in front. Too a few test shots to check the lighting and
discovered that there was more shadow than I really wanted. Covered the kitchen table
in sheets of A4 white paper and took a few more test shots. A couple of adjustments of my
own position until I was happy with the balance of shadow and light. Then I just put on my
actor’s hat and went to my happy place until I got the shot I wanted…

The real mood of the shot though was achieved in post-processing. Looking at the final
RAW file, while I liked the sharpness and detail, I wasn’t happy with the colour; I have quite
a ruddy complexion, and central heating makes me look permanently embarrassed, so I
decided a duotone or mono would be better. Adjusted contrast levels using calculations to
make an ‘average’ selection which I then adjusted in two curves layers, one inverted for shadows.
Made a duplicate of the background and ran a high pass filter, radius 50 pixels, to accentuate the lines
and details (I don’t always look this battered and usually have a more approachable visage) and
set its opacity to about 70% and blending mode to overlay. Finally a solid colour layer, almost black,
with blending mode set to colour. Presto…

Next week I’ll be showing you how to make your own Camera Obscura using nothing more than
a banana box, some sticky tape, Cuban heels and a short piece of string…

Cool photo, Rob, any chance of getting a Rob mask in time for next year’s halloween ;)

That’s the biz Rob! Cracking piece of work.
You must be well-chuffed about the ‘sexy’ accolade. I’m going to post
more self-portraits and see if I can fool some half-blind chick
into saying the same about me. I haven’t been called sexy since,
well, about 3rd year, so 27 years ago, I s’pose.

Cheers Mick. The plaster of Paris is drying on my face as I type, so the
mold should be ready soon. Of course I may have difficulty getting it off
my face; perhaps I should have shaved first… ;)

27 years, eh? Better post a few more topless pictures so…

Aaaaaaaaaggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh and by that i mean, how complicated does your experimenting sound…..

I thinks its a great shot Rob, but im only a beginner….so much so i only have a digital pocket camera but am waiting for my new SLR to arrive so i can do a beginners course…your methodology just boggled my head…maybe i shouldn’t read these posts until i have the course done :D so i have an idea of what ye guys are talking about sometimes…hehehe…

Although im only a beginner i can appreciate a nice shot…Wel done and hopefully some day i will be able to do what ye do and speak like ye speak….someday :D

Thank you for the nice compliments Mailman. As for my methodology, it’s all about
experimentation, and there isn’t anyone here on the site who isn’t still ‘learning’.
Good luck with the new SLR, and don’t forget to experiment constantly and post your
results for all of us to see…

    Rob.
