Trip to Donegal

    Hi All,

Looking for a little direction here, I am heading up to Donegal next week for a couple of days hoping the weather will be better than it has been and to mainly capture some landscape, and coast shots. Would appreciate a couple of areas that you may be familar with to visit that would be worthwhile, especially sunsets. Also would Glenveagh National Park be wortha visit. I hope to stay three/four days, with just some major photography in mind.

    Would appreciate any suggestions.

    Regards,

    Dominic.

    hi dominic,

i live in donegal town and i hope you get some good weather because it’s been absolutely shocking!

    i agree with BM.

The Poison Glenn is like a fairytale.

Definitely head up to the Slieve League, but just a work of warning, don’t attempt it if it’s too windy as one man’s pass leading up to it is so named for a reason!

Maghera Strand and Caves= i copied these directions so i hope they’re pretty accurate. the beach is AMAZING, even if you don’t get to the caves. there’s also a waterfall on the way where a lot of people take pre-nputial shots, etc

Turn right on the last road to Ardara just before you reach Killybegs harbor. There are three roads that lead to Ardara after Donegal town – take the third. Just before the road reaches Ardara, turn to the left where sign says Caves – at this turn you’ll notice a hiking map if you’d rather hike out to the point. Follow this road along the bay, past the waterfall on left, to the end, (a small parking lot with a sign pointing towards the caves) a very picturesque little village bounded by mountains on one side and fantastic beach on other. Follow the path, through the gate and along the beach beyond the village. At low tide you can explore deep caves at the base of the cliffs. The climb up to the top above the caves is also very nice. Instead of driving back the same way, continue on this road and make a loop back to N56. You’ll join N56 very close to the Caves turnoff. This is a good day trip to include a morning stroll through Ardara and an afternoon stroll through Killybegs on your way home.

Glenveagh is lovely as well though i don’t know of any strategic points to take shots including the whole castle, plenty of walking trails and nice gardens.

Good luck! looking forward to seeing some of your photos here!

The coast of Donegal is perfect for sunsets. Try to get a sunset at the Fanad Lighthouse. Stunning location. Do a google on it.

    Hi Dominic

If ye get a chance head to the place mentioned in this thread…. https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?p=61748&highlight=port#61748

Its a bit of a drive but worth it in my opinion. Hopefully ye get better weather than I did when I was there. Its a beautiful part of the country.

Agreed. Port is a great place. Plus there’s a nice walk to it along the coast from Glen.
