Hi there,
I want to buy a new or second hand tripod, needs to be robust and versitile, can anyone reccomend a brand and to get a good quality one how much will I need to spend?emma
AndyLParticipantI learnt the hard way that buying a cheap tripod means buying a tripod twice…
Get the best you can afford, simple and solid. Second hand quality will remain quality, it may not be as all singing all dancing as the new shiny ones, but it’ll be solid and dependable.
I have a Manfrotto, and it is very good indeed.
slang61ParticipantI got one in conns cameras for €99 new
it is ideal for a first one.
very basic but it is finejessthespringerParticipantI agree with Andy, buy cheap, buy twice. I bought a cheap and nasty Jessops tripod and it was just a pain in the bum, even ended up getting a black eye from it!!
Have been using this one for over a year http://www.jessops.com/Store/s47090/0/Tripods/Manfrotto/Modo-Maxi-785B-Compact-Tripod/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=1&CatId=342&ManIds=1320,&SortBy=SkuOfferingPriceASC&IsInStockOnly=False&comp=n
Not the best if your using big lenses or doing really long exposures but it’s very light and compact and the head is really easy to use.
Sinead.
cathaldParticipantThis looks like a decent offer,i have that head which cost £50 on its own

emma64Participantthanks for the speedy replies, so I’m now looking for a manfrotto if anyone is selling one!
MarkKeymasterWelcome to the site Emma.
Best to place a post in the ‘Equipment Wanted’ forum here: https://www.photographyireland.net/viewforum.php?f=18

joe_elwayParticipant100% agreed with the above comments. Like buying a lens, know what you want and then save for it. Legs, like lenses, will last for life. Consider load bearing capacities, weight, replacable heads, what head do you want, flexibility of the legs (independent is best) as well as the centre column. Then choose a head(s) approprate to your needs.
KWBarbsParticipantYou could also try Redsnapper. This is a new UK retailer and although the brand is new, they are quickly building a strong reputation for a keen price.
My brother (PD_Barbs) got the redsnapper legs and for £45 you really can not go wrong. Very surdy, well put together, with grips, spiked feet and bag all thrown in. He combined this with a manfrotto head for what I would reckon is a great deal for under £90.
As the others have said on here – don’t go light and cheap – I did and will replace it as soon as I can with a set of Redsnapper legs and ball head.

Very sound advice; tripods last forever, go for quality.
PuckpicsMemberI have a manfrotto 55 tripod, can’t recommend highly enough. I bought it because of the independant center column function which i think is particularly useful.
