Tripod advice for a newbie

I’ve had a flick through the 4 page tripod thread below, but I wanted to start a new thread to ask a few questions:

What do you need to look for, and what should you avoid, when buying a tripod? What difference does it make with:
    Metal or Plastic?
    Legs that have 2/3/4 extensions?
    Rotation etc?

I am not prepared to spend ?100 – ?150 – but I do understand how buying the cheapest one is wasting your money. How much do I have to spend to get something half decent, and any suggestions?

I did a quick scan on ebay and found these – but I have no real idea which are good and which are not…

    Any recommendations?

At around 100 I can’t suggest better either if you can handle the weight of it.
