Tripod for panoramas

I guess I cannot use my simple Manfrotto 710 for panoramas :(
I’d like to try such shots though and am looking for proper equipment. Can anyone suggest me what kind of tripod is better? Maybe I need anything else for panoramas?
    Thanks

it depends on what you mean by panoramas

if you mean stiched type things then:

you need a good quality tripod- i use a manfrotto 055 Xprob, which is heavy, but very solid

then you need a panoramic head – I use a manfrotto 303sph – its solid but a bit pricey, there are lots of other from people like nodal ninja etc

you could also do with a leveling base for the head.

the above is based on wanting to do it right in a repeatable way

You only really run into problems if you’ve got objects close to the camera in your composition. I’ve even had decent results handholding, but generally only with a longish lens and distant subject. As Steve says to do it right, you’ll need some form of pano head, the Panosaurus is probably about the cheapest, and the Nodal Ninja Steve mentioned isn’t too bad either. I think the main difference between these are pricier alternatives is ease of setup, though if you decide there’s one lens you want to use consistently for panoramas, this’d be a once off.

A levelling base really would be nice – otherwise your panorama is going to end up as a diagonal. I’ve had more than one come to a sticky end because of this!
