Turning bronze into gold

This received a bronze in competition. What can/should I do in future to get a higher result?
It was in fine art, I suppose it should have been in glamour!AllinthemindParticipantHi Sean,
I meant to reply to this sooner but have been bogged down in the last few days.. OK, Critique…
It’s a fairly simple cross-light, back-light shot of a woman. There’s a diagonal read to it, but not quite diagonal, it lacks mood/emotion for me. Sorry mate, on this one, Bronze means competent and I can go for that, it doesn’t really go beyond that. Put another shot up.
Always honest (yet caring) :)

seanmcfotoMemberFine by me Si,
Now that you’ve slated it, make suggestions for getting a better version!
I can safely say that I’m a total beginner at this!ThorstenMemberI would have been happy with bronze, but would be happier with Gold
I’m not sure why one might categorize this as glamour though? Do you think it would have done better as a glamour image? It’s glamorous in so far as it celebrates the female form, but aside from that I wouldn’t class this as glamour. Is it fine-art? I don’t think so, but then again, my own opinion is that the term fine-art is a grossly misused one in a lot of cases. I prefer the term figure-nude or just figure study and that’s certainly an appropriate one in this instance.
I often find it difficult to work out how one might have improved an image like this without radically altering it. I like the simplicity in an image like this. Maybe if there was more of an “S” or “C” in the pose rather than just a diagonal “I”? Or perhaps a change in lighting? Or a combination of these? Sometimes I find that while it helps to have an idea in your head to start out with, subtle changes during a shoot are the only way to arrive at the final image. A case of when you see it you know that you’ve got it. Does that make sense?

I would call this a figure study.
Which part of the figure are you choosing as your subject? You know that placing certain parts of the figure in certain spaces in the frame will draw the eye, as will the brightest and highest points of contrast. If you were showing the shadow boundaries “Glancing” across her mid-line, or using the edge light to make a nice curve, it would improve it. Also, Gelling the light (blue on the back, amber on the front (or opposing side) is a clasic combination, it parallels a sunny day, yellow sun and blue sky shadows etc).
What position do people put their bodies when experiencing different emotions? Even if you don’t show the head, a twist to the body as if to look down and to the right, is a normal “Feeling” pose.
Specifically, on your shot, I would have the edge light following the diagonal moe closely and light to show either 1 boob or both, it’s a bit halfway house on this shot, do you have others from the shoot?

seanmcfotoMemberThorsten, there is only really Fine Art or Glamour to choose from in the competition.
Si
There’s actually only one light in this. The whole shoot was done with 1 light, sometimes the octabox, sometimes a softbox and other times a bare reflector. If you want I can do a quick, unprocessed, gallery of the shoot. It should reveal a certain amount of working towards ideas (and in some cases not working!). I’d be more than happy to take critique on it, because it would mean I get more value from paying the model!
I have a few ideas, but as using hoses with electricity needs a lot of forethought, it’s not fully formed yet!
