Two unrelated ones for C&C….

    Hi All,

Just wondering what you all think of these two images. I’m not at this long and am wondering if I’m on the right track

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi Brian,

I love the second one it is such a great composition. I have seen the rope line leading out to a boat before, but not as great as this. The background works very well too, and the colourfulness of the boat and knot.
The weight of the weather and the weight of the rope both seem dank and heavy.
    Needs a rotation though.

The first is nice, a beautiful scene, not as big an impact for me, composition-wise, as the first .
The brightness of the sky just above the bridge seems a bit strange, I don’t know why.

    Both very good photos.

    No 1 !!!!

For me is a winner. The blue hue and the subject really works,
I think iits a stunner because it is different.

I think the second one is too busy, but i can see how people will love it.

    No 1 again, lovit

Two very nice shots. I much prefer number 1 though. Like Alan said, I find it a little too busy but it is a good shot nonetheless.

The processing on 1 is excellent also imo. It looks like an IR shot, especially around the tree on the left. Is it IR?

1 is nice, but I also prefer 2. I like it that not also do you have the lead-in line but also included the ring in the pic. If the foreground were more in focus, it’d be brilliant.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I really appreciate it.

Just to try to answer some of the questions:

    Number 1
This was ordinary enough before I processed it. It’s not an IR, although some other people have said that to me. I just started with a preset on Lightroom and spent some time tweaking it. I had to remove some very prominent power cables that ran the length or the bridge. I found this fairly tricky, it’s usually easy enough but not on this one for some reason. I was using the heal tool on GIMP, with a fairly high opacity and a soft edged brush. I found I got the best results when I didn’t “drag” across it but just kept clicking the mouse repeatedly as I moved across the photo (if you know what I mean). Is this the accepted technique?
Did anyone else notice the healing?

    Number 2
I wasn’t sure about this one to begin with, I thought it might be a bit cliched or something. I was surprised to find those mussel shells (or whatever they are) near the ring, maybe someone else was taking a photo!? I was very disappointed I didn’t get the foreground in focus as pointed out. I didn’t have the tripod with me and just took a few shots handheld, this was taken at f7.1, maybe should have upped the ISO I suppose.

    Thanks again!

I use the clone and heal tools myself in GIMP. I found that for power lines I could place the tool on the start of the line, click shift and place it on the end. Cuts down on some of the work. I also use a brush that’s like a bar with soft edges. Sometimes one is better than the other.

I have to say I didn’t notice it used here which is not always easy!

Thanks for the tip Fergus! I was wondering what that line thing was about. I’ll give it a go…
