Not Ulster’s best season now is it?? First time out with my new 70-200 f2.8….. Shooting rugby is harder than I thought, espeically when the action is over the far side of the pitch and your mate is gabbing on in your ear….

I don’t think they’re front page material but hey it’s a learning curve.

Some potential in the shots there, but it comes back down to your settings.

You need a shutter speed greater than 1/400. Bump up your ISO (800 or 1600). You’ll end up with sharper images. Shutter speed is key and aperture is less important. Use shutter priority.

I’m looking forward to Leinster V Ulster on 26th Dec.

Cheers Paul. I didn’t want to push the ISO too high, the Sony a100 has a bit too much noise at high ISO’s.
I’d love to get to the RDS on St. Stephen’s day, but I’ll be up North, not heading down to the Mammy until the 29th.

Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to push your camera to try and capture an image. Anything less than 1/400 is not really going to give you a sharp image, due to motion. You need to freeze that action.

    Just keep practicing. :D

with an f2.8 you should be able to push up the shutter speed even on the a100 .. I used to get away with 1/200 on my dynax 5d with an f/5.6 and iso400.
the a100 should be capable of at least similar level of performance to the dynax, and with an f2.8 lens you should definitely be able to jack up the shutter speed and iso.
You might even get away with shutting off the IS on the camera body.. that might help with the noise at the higher ISO. Try to get your hands on a small monopod if you have trouble handholding the lens.
