Ultra Wide (Canon10-22/Sigma10-20/Tokina11-6)

I know I’ll be asking a lot here but if anyone has a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 along with an EF-S 17-85 is there any chance I could get someone to take 2 shots with the Tokina, 1 at 11 and 1 at 16 and then 1 with the EF-S 17-85 at 17. I need to get an ultra wide for my 40d and this seems to tick all the boxes but I want to be sure that when spending this much it’ll be worth it for the 2.8.
Would this be a better choice excluding the 2.8 over the canon 10-22/sigma 10-20 for static motor photography/wedding/family situations.
Finally is Tokina full frame compatible? I’m considering going 5d mk2 late this year. I know the canon/sigma are not compatible although I’ve heard people say you can still use them. Anyone know where I’d stand here.
Thanks for the replies in advance.
Piotr MMemberTokina is DX lens like all the other lenses you asked about, however, from 14mm (up) vignette is negligible on full frame. This is very sharp lens and worth buying. Dont worry about auto focus. At such short focal lenght it is difficult to find front or back focus because depth of field is enormous.
I’d go for tokina if you can get it. I bought sigma, because I got new for half the price of tokina and I’m very happy with it. Its advantage over tokina is lack of CA’s and no light reflexes.
If I could afford I would go for nikon d700 plus nikkors 14-24/2.8 and 24-70/2.8.ShleedMemberSigma 12-24mm. Decent on crop and it doesn’t vignette on full-frame, even at 12mm.
MuttlyParticipantUnfortunately the Sigma does have the f2.8 which I’m looking for. Hence the reason for the Tokina. Thanks for the reply though. Keep em coming.
BMParticipantWhy do you need 2.8 on a wide-angle lens?
You’re going to get such a deep depth of field that aperture will not be a key component.
Be careful of using a wide-angle lens for group/portrait shots as it will not provide a good perspective – people/faces will appear broader than they are!
richiehatchMemberI have the Sigma 12-24 and use it on the 5d 1 and 2. Its a very good lens especially when stopped
down. There is NO barrell distortion visible even at 12mm which is astonishing for such a wide lens.
If you are thinking of getting the 5d2 then seriously consider it. Compensate the lack of f2.8 by shooting
at hi ISO’s…!Richie
ShleedMemberAnd also because the focal length is so small, you can easily hand hold shots up to 1/10-1/20th second without blur.
MuttlyParticipantWhen time comes to get a 5d2 I may consider the sigma then but as its only possible for now its not a big concern. It won’t really be used for portraits or group shots although it may get used the odd time but not as a proper lens just what happens to be on.
The main use will be for still motor photography. In certain circumstances the 2.8 will allow for the correct dof that is required for certain shots.
