Umbrella fittings

Quite new to all this lighting malarky, have a basic elinchrom set and I’m looking to add a couple of cheap umbrellas for more messing around. Currently looking at this on ebay and was wondering about the fitting to my lights. Are umbrellas all made to a standard fitting size? (7mm diameter on my lights I think)
Bit of a noob question I’ll admit, but this whole studio lighting thing is very new to me.
GCPParticipantOn Bowens lights you need a kind of shade attached to fit the umbrella to. Its called a “Spill Kill” I expect Elinchrom has a simular fitting
ThorstenMemberAh Gerry, stop using fancy terminology like KILL BILL, er, I mean spill-kill
What Gerry is referring to is really nothing more than a reflector, which you should already have anyway, although even here there are different size reflectors you can get, in order to vary the spread of light. When used with an umbrella, a reflector stops the light from spilling out beyond the edges of the umbrella, hence the term spill-kill.
I had a look at the link you posted and it looks like it should work with your lights. Alternatively, if you’re looking for some third-party accesories at much less than Elinchrom prices, take a look at http://www.studioflash.co.uk/. It’s good quality (although not necessarily up to Elinchroms own standards) and fit’s perfectly (I know because I have some of the items and intend to buy a few more there).

Thorston ……LOL…….. I know when I bought the Bowens lights they were not included ! They cost about ?135.00IR for 2 at the time (1995). I think thats how I came up with the “kill” bit. At that price its no wonder Bowens discribe them as Spill-Kills. Mind you ……. think they are still around the same price …… as ever, I went shopping on a bad day.
jb7Participantmight save you spending lots of money on spillkills-
Tho don’t take it as a reccommendation- as such- I don’t know this particular product-
I think softboxes are more versatile than brollies, and the head can be placed further back-j
