Un petit promenade avec Pierre l’Homme…

I took a trip to Derry a couple of Sundays back (my first in more than twenty years) and had the good fortune to meet with the ever entertaining and erudite Pete the Bloke, hatted and armed with a Pentax. We had a short stroll along a couple of hundred metres of the city wall with commentary by Pete, before sitting for coffee and a chat in my hotel lobby. Not many pictures were taken, but I thought I’d post this one just to prove I was actually there.
…and for Joseph, because he likes this sort of thing, here’s the 100% crop…
Rob.
erinParticipantHi Rob,
The perspective with no distortion and the framing are great aspects. You improved the impact of that beautiful architecture!! The crop looses some definition, but I guess you just wanted a closed view on this one.
jb7ParticipantPour moi?
Thanks Rob,
I do like to see this sort of thing-
in this case I think you might have selected a slightly sharper part of the frame-
it looks like the focus point is somewhere in the foreground. The reduction looks fine,
it seems nicely sharpened,
but I’m wondering about how you go about your sharpening-
the 100% crop looks oversharpened, with quite pronounced halos.Tha sky is quite grainy too,
also likely to be as a result of the sharpening-I’m jealous of your guided tour,
I must try to book one myself soon-Well composed shot,
nicely converted-and thanks for the crop-

That’s class. I must go back and look at my shots from that day – I suxpect I got nothing this good.
The crop you’ve chosen is perfect (assuming you cropped it a bit).
davenewtParticipantMy 2c… I don’t see what’s so great about the crop. I haven’t seen the original, not that it matters.
For me, the wall on the left dominates too much, without there being anything interesting about it. The graffiti is distracting… and the focal point of the shot seems to be the clock, which is hanging off the other side of the pic and, as JB pointed out, a little out of focus.
The roof line is good, but it leads your eye off the edge, with no reason (IMHO) to come back…
Stepping back from the arch to get a little foreground leading into the shot and having more of the arch itself in the frame might have worked better? Maybe turning the camera to the right to centre the clock too. Not knowing what’s on the other side of it, of course, so it may be a pointless suggestion.
And you’d have to go back. Maybe an excuse to revisit before 2027 at least :-)
Correct me if I’m barking up the wrong end of the stick, by all means.

jb7ParticipantDave,
I like to see details of pictures
because it shows the quality of the image at pixel level for different camera/ lens combinations.-
the reductions usually posted here can hide a multitude-I’m not sure,
but I don’t suppose that Rob intended the crop to be a picture in its own right-
Not that I’d want to speak for Rob, of course-j
davenewtParticipantTo clarify – I was talking about the crop of the first pic. Sorry about the confusion in the first line of my post above!

RobMemberThanks folks, appreciate all your comments.
Dave,
I have my reasons for the particular crop I chose.
There’s a pretty strong clue in the title of the image
if you look closely.
It is of course a picture of Bishop Street Within, taken
from Bishop Street Without, and not (though it might have
been had I stepped back to include a little more foreground)
a picture of Bishop’s Gate. Some freshly painted double yellow
lines leading right to the foot of the gate would have led viewers
to that point but not beyond where I wanted to lead them.
I thank you for taking the time to comment and take your points
on board. It could be sharper. It could be framed more appealingly.
This is however the view I wanted to capture. Perhaps
next time I’ll do better…
Must remember to bring a wide angle lens with me when
I return in 2027… :?Rob.
