Unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found

    Hi,

I hope that someone can help me with this!

I had a hard disk crash on my laptop last week. It was ten days since my previous backup and some JPEG’s were lost. However, I revovered them from my camera memory card by “undeleting” them with the Recuva utility program. While the majority of files – all jpegs (shot in jpeg not RAW) – have been recovered and can be opened in Adobe Photo Elements (v. 6), a substantial quantity (Easter camera walkabouts!) cannot and have the following error: “Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found”. I did Google it, but, the solutions suggested seem mixed and the one application prominently mentioned (Stellar) is not freeware and gets bad reviews. I cannot open the files to re-save them either.

Does anybody know of a utility to repair the jpeg files, preferably, a batch run program? Proven Freeware in preference, but, don’t mind an appl. if it’s reasonably priced.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

    Have a good weekend.

    Steve.

    Hi Steve.
I’ve successfully recovered photos from one of my cards using Photorecovery LE. It recovered some files which had been deleted long before too ( almost 600 images). The programme used to be free, not sure if it still is, but worth trying. It creates a recovered folder on a disk (other than your camera disk), and then you can save them to wherever you want.

There is a free programme called IRFAN VIEW (May be one word). It is a basic imaging programme, but it fantastic for opening all sorts of file types and has often opens files that my Photoshop Elements says are corrupted or have invalid JPEG markers (whatever these are!). You can then re-save in the format of your chioce.
    Best of luck

Thanks for the replies and good advice. I will give them a try tomorrow and post an update.

    Best regards,
