Upgrading from 400D

Hey Guys,
I am sure you are probably all sick to death of these kind of questions. But I just need to get some more advice before making my decision
At the moment I had a Canon 400D which is broken, well the LCD screen has cracked, and this has me wanting to upgrade the camera as It would probably cost me the same to repair the LCD screen as it would to buy a decent 2nd hand 400D.
The two options I have been toying around with are the Canon 40D and the Canon 5D
I have been doing comparisons on different sites and things but I am still undecided what to get. And then when I heard about the rumours of a Canon 5D Mk II, well that just confused me even more.
I’m always in the USA at least once every 2 weeks so I will be buying it there and am in line to make a whopping saving compared to Irish prices.
I just don’t know what to do!
steelydanParticipantWhats types of photography appeals to you most Dan?? If its landscapes then the full frame 5D would be a good buy and coupled with the Canon 17-40 you have a nice set up. If its sports and wildlife then the 40D with its 1.6X crop would be a better choice. I had the same dilemma a while back and went with the 40D as I am happy with the crop factor on my 100-400 and bought a 12-24 to suffice for landscapes. Both Cameras are excellent and you cant go wrong with either choice. You might consider a low mileage 5D ,what with the rumor of the 5D MkII then the Americans would get rid of their hardly used 5D’s at a snip..
dan.browneParticipantThe photography that appeals most to me would be portraiture, fashion, etc. Not really into the Landscape or Wildlife and sports side of things.
I mean you would think it would be an easy choice to make… but it is so hard LOL
steelydanParticipantWell if its Fashion Portraits and you plan on doing studio work then its the 5D. Unless you have a big studio that you can step backwards…Lots
The 85 f1.8 lens will be a 85mm lens and the 70-200 will be true full frame you can get close to your model , not having to keeping walking backwards to get in the frame.
Nuff said go Get yourself a 5D
dan.browneParticipantBut what about the 5D MK II… I know it is still only rumour at this stage but should I hold off for it?? Or just go and get one now??
steelydanParticipant5D MkII would only be slight improvements over the 5D. Try google rumors and see what people will think the differences are. I would say a couple of MP more, Liveview, Weatherproofing. Not worth what they will charge.5D is a great camera, wait until MKII is out and get a cheap 5D and a couple of GOOD lenses, Bodies are only bodies lenses are the one that “makes ” a photo and never de-value
ben4130ParticipantThe roumers have been going round for quite some time about a 5DMK2, In my opinion its better to get whats available to you now rather than waiting a long time for something which may never happen.
