Upgrading from Bigma to Canon L glass
-
darraghParticipant
Hi,
I am thinking of upgrading my Bigma for a faster, sharper set of lenses and my budget is around $2500 in B&H.
I am looking at the following 2 sets of lenses.- Set 1:
- Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS or Canon 70-200 f/2.8L
Canon EF 400mm f/5.6Lor
Set 2 (Upgrading Canon 17-85mm as well):- Canon 100-400 f4-5.6L IS
Canon 24-105 f/4L IS or Canon 24-70mm f/2.8LI recently hired a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS for a wedding and I was very surprised with the results and I am quite tempted by the non-IS version of this lens. I’d would like to have a 400mm range lens for nature/wildlife and also have a good portrait lens in the 70-135mm range.
What are peoples opinions of these lenses, which would make a better set in replacing the range of the Bigma, is there any I should avoid?
Any other suggestions other alternative combinations that would better match my requirements? Thanks
Darraghnfl-fanParticipantSet 2 seems to cover a wider range… going from 24 to 400 so for the regular Joe that would be a much better choice.
Set 1 is limiting yourself to 70-200 & 400 with nothing close to a wide angle or portrait and nothing between 200 and 400. But upon re-reading your post I think your saying you going to upgrade the 17-85mm too… so maybe that covers the missing ranges?
darraghParticipantI am interested in covering the 70-400mm range. If I was going for Set 2, I would be upgrading my 17-85mm lens as well.
I have the wide angle to portrait range covered by a Sigma 10-20mm and Canon 17-85mm, I would eventually like to upgrade the Canon 17-85mm but I am only really interested in upgrading the Sigma 50-500mm lens at the moment.Darragh
nfl-fanParticipantYour still missing the 300-400 range with Set 1 so that might be a consideration.
darraghParticipantI am still missing the 200-400 range, so maybe change the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L for the Canon 300mm f/4.0L IS and a Canon 1.4x tele-converter
PodgeMemberI had an opportunity to try the 100-400 IS recently and was impressed.
I would be inclined to go for Set 3
Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L or Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS
Canon 100-400 f4-5.6L ISAlso, have a look at KEH. You might find some good second hand deals on L zoom lenses
or here for primes
