Upgrading to Higher Resolution

Anybody advise me on acceptable levels of pixels to give good clear photos. I’m looking at other digital cameras with between 7/8 million pixels and up to 5+ optical zoom. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. I’m not planning on getting any digital SLR cameras, just the ordinary pocket size type.
Thanks,
SpinmanSteveDParticipantI would worry less about pixel count, and more about the digital noise characteristics of the sensor. I would rather have a ‘clean’ 3MP image than a noisy 10MP image.
Look on the web for noise tests for the models you are interested in.

And don’t forget the lens has an important role to play too!
If you’re talking about compact cameras, they are “Diffraction” limited in terms of quality to around 4-5 Megapixels, so any more pixels than that is just creating extra noise. For the best pictures, generally, set the aperture 1 click (1/3 stop) in from wide open on aperture priority.
The Fuji F30, is one of the best around for clean images at low ISOs, it’s a 6 Megapixel camera.

spinmanMemberThanks to all, (Steve, Thorsten, Allinthemind and any others), for advice on my query. Any good sites that can provide that sort of info?
I am looking at a Samsung S850 with 8mp & 5 optical zoom. It has image stabilisation including advanced shake reduction, with ISO up to 1600 for low light work. What’s your opinion on this package?

Here is a good site for pocket cam reviews with sample photos for each camera.

The F30 gets great reviews, as does most of the new Ixus range…

Thanks Tim
spinmanMemberweelesMemberWe had a professional Potrait photographer at our camera club a few weeks ago and he had a selection of 20″ prints taken with a 6MP camera. True, its was a SLR and the noise was imperceptable, but it was still only 6MP and the prints were fantastic.
As one of the other posters noted, the defraction through the smaller lens on a compact camera will have a greater limiting effect than a few extra Mega Pixels or lack thereoff.
It is also worth noting that doubling the MP count does not give you twice the resolution. To double the resolution you need four times the number of pixels.

Thank you for that Wheeles. I’ve decided on a Canon A550 Digital with 7.1mp & 4+ optical zoom. I wanted to balance out the compactness of the camera with higher pixels & zoom level than the camera I’ve got.
