Use of flash at pitchside
-
mciParticipant
I was covering a footy game recently and was pitchside as usual on the sideline near dugouts. Just behind the byline at the corner flag there was a tog from quite a large agency, 1dM3 400mm etc etc, near the end of the game play was at the corner flag and to my astonishment, with the tog no more than 6-8ft away , he pulls out his second with smaller lens (nothing strange there) but as he is taking the shots his flash is going like crazy , and into one of the players line of sight. I know this, as one of the player was rubbing away at his eyes as he was walking waway what was eventually a free kick.
Now I am no supertog, in fairnness the only thing I have is love of sports photography and enthusiasm, but this was the first time I seen this so close to players. Surely this cant be right ?
I would love to hear some comments on this especially, though not exclusively from sport togs. Or am I in the minority to find this wrong?
_________________paulParticipantIs it possible his flash was malfunctioning and going off without him knowing? Maybe he turned it on by mistake. The new 580EXII is supposed to be almost quiet when recycling.
I am surprised though. I’d say he was getting ready for some after game shots/celebrations.
I’ve never seen a flash used during a field sport before, especially not from the pros.
mciParticipantHi Paul:
No he would have known his flash was on. I couldnt believe it myself. I would say 6ft max away from the players.I dont want to make the agency or person in public so I wont mention on here who the agency was, but there pics where in a national yesterday!SANCHOMemberHope it wasn’t the agency i’ve got a placement with :D That’s rule number one as far as sports action and music photography goes for me. NO FLASH!! It’s just rude and as you said extremely off-putting for the players/musicians. If that was a world cup final or champions league final or U2 gig or something he’d be hung, drawn and quartered.
