Use of Photographs

Mike BurkeParticipant
I shot a wedding over the week-end. Towards the end of the day the driver asked me, in front of the groom, for some copies of my car shots for use on their web-site. The groom interrupted saying that he would need to get the brides permission as she is particular about this type of thing.
My understanding is that, as the copyright is mine, it is my decision as to whether I allow them to be used or not and het the bride and groom have no say in it. Am I right? My deal/wedding package does not assign copyright to anyone else.stcstcMemberdepends on the contract you had with the couple
this is a very good reason to have a contract too, that way there is no misunderstanding
markcapilitanParticipantMy contract always states that I have copyright, and can use the images as I wish for advertising. But if I’m sending into mags or putting on my website (as all couples know I do) then if they don’t want them up there, fine, I don’t put them up there. You should be doing what makes your clients happy, not what a car company wants. If they don’t mind, by all means give the car guys some pics, but only if the bride & groom are happy.
Mike BurkeParticipantMark, stcstc,
Thanks for the reality check. You’re dead right and I shouldn’t have lost sight of exactly who my client is.brightredshoesParticipantMaybe even get back in touch with the driver and say you’d love to help him out with pics of his car for his advertising purposes.
Might be worth doing an ad-hoc shoot for him for free and giving him a stack of your business cards. Next time someone asks him if hes available for a wedding, he can respond with ‘and do you have a photogrpaher yet?’.
Who knows, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship…– Tom

.. and possibly the contact she had with the car company too.
If for example, she was paying either ‘your time’ or ‘their time’, then she may feel she has a say in what all was done during those hours.
