Using wide aperatures for Portraits etc

My favourite lens of all is my little canon 50mm f1.4…when taking photos whether it’s people or objects, I try to use f2.8 and sometimes wider..in some photos it is very obvious that only a section of the photo is in focus, sometimes this is the effect i want but sometimes its not! …I do set the AF too…however my query is; in order to have that ‘headshot’ or whole body shot really stand out in complete focus from the background, what are the reccomended settings? I’m just not 100% happy with mine and pondering on this for days..thankyou! p.s: alas, i cannot upload any pics as broadband isnt available where i live….such is life!

Stay at F2.8 or smaller, and try to shoot with more space between subject and background. Hopefully that should help.

It’s nice to use these lenses wide open, but you will get softening outside of the main focus point no matter what you try. The only time to really need very wide apertures is indoors in poor lighting, or as you say, when you actually want the effect.

Why not step down to f/8, the sweet spot for many lenses, which will give you sharpness over a much wider area. Being a prime, the IQ will be great, a fast lens does not need to always be used wide open.
