Vartry Reservoir – Pump House
-
Mr.HParticipant
I toyed with putting this in landscape, or architecture, but in the end plumped for non-specific!
This is from Sunday morning up at Vartry Reservoir, the light was remarkably unremarkable. I have put up the polarised version and the unpolarised as I am undecided which is best…. hopefully you can help me here, along with any other comments you feel I may find useful.
These are my first shots with my new sigma 10mm-20mm. Must say it looks like a fun lens. However I am glad that I picked something with strong verticles as a test shot – they took a good degree of straigtening and now I know what I am up against with lens distortion.
and the polarised version below
Gary
lousyParticipantIMO the un polarized version as the sky seem to be more blown with the filter, now that being said the foreground is better with the polarizer but weighing up both I’d go for the one without.
Nice image too.
Patnfl-fanParticipantHiya Gary,
Been staring at the 2 shots the past few mins trying to make a decision.
I think I’d roll with #2 as the stones which make up the foreground are a lot more vivid in this version along with the water and the reflections.
It’s a beautiful composition I have to say, only spoilt by the featureless sky which we all know just is not easily captured when there’s now’t in it.
Forgive my ignorance but can I ask where this is located? As a Wicklow man do you have any nice little locations up there, aside from the obvious, that you could recommend for a day’s shoot?
John
Mr.HParticipantThanks John & Pat,
I think I have a slight preference for the polarised version also.
Vartry Res is at Roundwood (Turn off the ‘main’ road and head to newtonmountkennedy at a junction 100 yards or so on the Dublin side of the village). As a locations go it is OK and has potential but there are plenty of spots in wicklow that are higher up the list. Having said that I don’t get out as much as I should in th hills – always have a time restricion of some sort… hence the plethora of greystones sunrise shots. The link below may help though.

cian.m.hayesParticipantI’d go for the one without the polariser. True, the polarier has brought out a lot more depth in the foreground but I think that detracts from the pumphouse as the focal point of the image. In the first image the building sits comfortably as the focus where as in the second one I find it isn’t as strong. I might also consider shaving a little off the bottom and left of the first image to help it a little further. I’d be curious to see it in a different light, the dull overcast sky isn’t doing the scene any favours but with a nice splash of dawn or dusk colours (orange building, blue sky + water) this composition might come into its own.

pihjinMemberYou could cut the two images together. If you didn’t think that would be too much of an edit job.
Hmmm it’s hard to describe the point I’m talking about.
In the reflection… the ‘shelf’ part of the tower under the doorway that has little blocks attached to it (near the base before the twoer rises up straight), running to the bank where there is an orange coloured area (wood chippings?) and running along inside of the green of the bank to the edge of the picture.
If you like I can give it a go to show you but I didn’t want to just go for it as you have a no to editing your pictures.
Mr.HParticipantThanks for the feedback Cian and pihjin.
I agree Cian – it may be one to revisit on one of those long summer evenings.
Pihjin – you may have lost momentum on this – but feel free to post an edit if you have one.
Gary
pihjinMember:) yeah I tend to get carried away but I was just considering how to get the best of both worlds…
Anyway this took all of about 30 seconds to do and now you have a hybrid photo!
(I wonder if that’s good for your carbon footprint :D ? )Here you go:
Pihjin
Mr.HParticipantOk I see what you’ve done… I thing I’ll be able to manage that on the that one the original(s)…. thanks
