Versatile Macro lense

    Hi

I want to start taking some macro shots so want to get myself a nice macro lense. At the moment I predominantly take wildlife shots and some sports stuff. Im looking to start coming up the learning curve on portrait stuff aswell.

Guess im looking for something that will take good macro shots but would be useful for other stuff aswell.

Seen the Canon 60mm and canon 100mm macro lense recommended here quite a bit. Im using a 400D at the minute.

Both are fast lenses from what I can tell so I guess the 60mm would be good for portraits but tempted by the speed of the 100mm for some of wildlife stuff too.

But which is the better macro lense. Am I right in saying that the 100mm will allow me to take shots of nervous insects from further away?

    Any advice?

My advice would be to go for the 100mm Lens, yes you can take photo’s from further away.

I have the 100mm lens, and the MR-E14 Ringflash, deadly combo.

On the other hand, there are 2 versions of the 60mm, the one is life size reproduction and the other is up to 5 times larger than life (expensive lens) – well worth the money.

All and all I would say, get the 100mm lens, stunning quality. Although, Canon just released an upgrade, the same 100mm 1:1 Macro lens, also f2.8, BUT it has IS and it’s an L Series (around €900 on eBay)(only Canon Macro with IS), so needless to say, I’m selling my 100mm to get the IS version. Have a friend of mine looking at it, to buy of course for a week or so, as I’ve really used the lens around 20 times.

Doesn’t matter, I don’t even have a body at the moment (next year January – EOS 7D!)

You can also look at Sigma, the 150mm Macro is suppose to be a cracker, I use to own the 105mm Macro (Sigma), what a super lens – EXCEPT, it took AGES to focus, kept on ‘hunting’, ‘zooming in and out’, BUT image quality I found very very sharp and really good, better than the Canon I think.

Hope it helps and I didn’t confuse you… the 100mm Canon is a very good choice though.

If it’s mainly for macro I would get the 100mm as you can get comfortably close to your subject without scaring them away. I have a 60mm but would love to get the 65mm X5 lens (I’d have to sell my soul though to afford it  ). I think you would definitely need a ringflash to get the best out of them though and this is why I wouldn’t worry too much about IS as the flash would freeze the subject. But if using it as a general lens IS would be an advantage. I normally focus manually when taking macro so autofocus again is not too important for this. Hope this helps somewhat.
