Viewfinders

I really love my Fuji S2 – nice camera except – the viewfinder…
Last week I also dug out my trsty old Nikon FM2 as a backup and the difference in the viewfinder was amazing.
The FM2 has a bright crisp and easy to use viewfinder – I wear glasses so it is very nice for those too.

I just wonder why Camera manufacturers put such awful viewfinders on their cameras.
OK I could get a new Nikon/Canon and use the rear screen for a bigger view but somehow its just not as good as using a 35mm film camera.

It somehow makes me feel I’m cheating !
Anyone else feel like that ?

I have an Nikon FM2 also, yea the viewfinder is great, lovely and bright compared to a cropped sensor digital camera. Presume the full frame digital cameras have nice bright view finders like the 35mm camera. haven’t looked through a Nikon D3 or Canon 5D etc so don’t know…

Think this is basically down to lens/camera using cropped sensors etc so the light box or what ever its called is allot smaller so not as much light gets in so its not as bright, I could be wrong though

Ditto what Martin said – it’s all about the image size. The full frame Canon cameras have nice bright viewfinders compared to their APS-sensor sized siblings. But you should try using a medium format camera, then even the viewfinder in your FM2 will seem dull and uninteresting. I still recall years ago the first time I looked through a medium format viewfinder, I felt like stepping into it! :D It was like seeing a miniature 3D world!

Yep, full-frame certainly has an advantage over crop-sensor cameras. However, there is also a difference in the quality of the mirror and pentaprism used in the viewfinder assembly among full-frame cameras.

If you think medium format viewfinders are nice (and I do – I love my Mamiya C220 waist level viewfinder), then you should try looking at the ground glass of a 4×5″ (or even better, 8×10″) view camera =)

Unfortunately it’s very hard to manually focus with the small viewfinders. Looking through my Mamiya 7, I can see every little detail that I have seen with my bare eyes, unfortunately I can’t say the same about my Nikon D200. I’m just hoping that the sensors will keep growing and the full-frame or larger sensor cameras will be cheaper. I will save my manual Nikkors for that time.

I know – except you’ve got to be prepared to do handstands under a dark cloth to get the full value out of it

I’ve just thought  Wouldn’t this make a great April fools joke? Show someone a view camera and then tell them they’ve got it turned upside down and they need to turn it over to see the image correctly

    Thorsten –
Heh heh. That would be mean!

Of course, when I bought my view camera, I was cheap and went with the f/8 90mm super-angulon, instead of the f/5.6.

Talk about your dark image! Even under the dark cloth, it’s hard to see what’s going on.

    Cheers,

I used to tell people if you turned a transparency over you could see the other side of the person …
    amazing how many people tried…
