    Hi All,

Took this shot during the summer off the Ballybunion Coast at a place known locally as the Virgin Rock. Messed around a little in photoshop and this is what I came up with. All comments welcome.

    Hello Big Fella-
    welcome to the site-

    Nice colours in this one-
There are a few things I could say-
the colour in the water is fabulous-
    more notable than the sky,
so I might have made more of that by tilting down a bit-

And to make even more of it, a polarizer might have helped,
by taking the sheen off the top of the water-
it might have darkened the sky just a little too-

I’ll let someone else mention the horizon-
not a mistake, more of a personal preference,
a kindof an individual world view-

Great photographers through history have opted for horizons that weren’t parallel to one side of their frame…

    Very nice composition and picture.

To echo JB, The horizon is off, but this can be fixed. A polarizer filter or a hard neutral grad filter over the sky might have held the colour in the sky better. Bottom half of the picture is really nice, overall a very nice picture

This picture is certainly worth framing, it a brilliant seascape. My only one negative comment would be that the colour of the grass behind the rock looks a bit too bright.

    Thanks for all the c & c.

Certainly the best of the colour was in front of me that day but I felt compelled to put a lot of sky in there which I now know is not always needed. A set of ND filters are also a must and I might as well admit that I had a polarizer in my bag. I have learned a lot from posting this pic which is what I wanted.

Had a look at your exif info on the picture (see below)

You used an ISO of 400 and a shutter speed of 1/250 of a second. Personally i would have used a slower shutter speed and got the iso down to 100. Your images will be less noisy at ISO100 if you print them. Are you using the AUTO setting? Its worth trying to use some of the manual modes

    M

    # Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/250 second = 0.00400 second
    # Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 10/1 = F10.00
    # ISO Speed Ratings = 400
    # Original Date/Time = 2007:07:29 11:01:49
    # Shutter Speed Value (APEX) = 522046/65536
Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) = 1/250.00 second
    # Aperture Value (APEX) = 435412/65536
    Aperture = F10.00
    # Flash = Flash did not fire
    # Focal Length = 18/1 mm = 18.00 mm
    # Image Width = 800 pixels
    # Image Height = 573 pixels

I normally use the AP setting. I always leave white balance set on Auto, from reading around here I need to change this habit. For this picture what would be the best setting for WB. I now also have a better understanding of the ISO setting and how it affects shutter spead. Thanks for comments

Hi big fella,i would have set the wb to sunny on this one,but if you shoot in raw,you can change the white balance at post proccesing.i see by exif you used f10,i would have used a smaller apeture say f13 or 14,i hardly use f22 at all unless i need a bit of help with a slower shutter speed,as i have been told that it leads to diffraction.
