Virgin territory C&C very welcome!

Well as I mentioned on another thread NoelyF and griangraf have forced me from the comfort of this cheap VikingDirect seat into the garden. Here are two from this afternoon.
I have a long way to go to catch up I know so any advice will be appreciated.
Clicking on the pics will bring you to Flickr where they can be microscopically examined
Noely FParticipantWell ya must’ve taken a shortcut ‘cos there’s nothing wrong with these……The garden spider….Wow
griangrafParticipantBoth shots very, very good for a quick afternoon trip around the garden. Second one with ladybird is is particularly good because I find they can be very difficult to shot because of their shiny carapace. Spider is also good. Background is very nice. However, DOF gets tougher the closer you go. What lens did you use and did you use a flash?
ValentiaMemberThanks Noely. A compliment indeed.
I did have to do a fairly severe crop on the spider though. A 1:1 macro is inticing.
“The garden spider”, is that the official name? I’m useless with names of plants or insects. Hopefully learning them will be another side effect of this new found interest. For example I’d love to be able to tell you what the name of those vivid berries on the hedge in the background.
ValentiaMemberThanks griangraf.
The same lens as yourself and NoelyF, The Sigma 70-300 5.6 No flash, the sun caused the highlight. Yeah the DOF on the spider, as well as the focus, could be better. The colourful background helps to disguise that though
griangrafParticipantFair play to you you really got the best out of that lens. I find it often very hit and miss at times. You seem to have the eye for the macro work. Best advice I can give you is if can afford it you should invest in either a Sigma 105mm or a 150mm Macro (or similar from Canon/Nikon). Then you will really start to see the possibilities of Macro work. I find these lens are also excellent for portriats because of the 2.8 aperture.
I think I’ll be getting up off the seat tomorrw and getting into the garden. Take it easy.

Ah but I didn’t show you the dozens of disasters.
joolsveerParticipantGreat photos Danny. I’m now just getting a taste for getting out in the garden too.
RobertoMemberI like the spider shot because the perfect background and good details of itself and the spider web.
