Thanks for the comments guys, I might go for the 17-85 now….. descisions descisions…. does it ever get easier.. lol
Madra RuaParticipantJust to add to the confusion I have the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC Macro
and I am very happy with the quality of the images it produces. It is a highly underestimated lens, but gets compared to the Canon 17-85 a bit.
While the canon has the edge with USM and IS,
the Sigma seems to generally produce better photos, especially at 17-35 mm.It’s also cheaper and has a nice macro mode.
scasMembermy 2 pennys might be a bit different, the 17-85 is a distinctly average lens, a bit better that the kit 18-55 but not worth anywhere near the money( especially in this country ) so the 28-135 s pretty much the same but with a more usable range, considering the 17-85 is poor at wide angles, so if its a choice between the 2 go for the 28-135……. sounds daft but what sits on mine most of the time is a 70-200l 2.8 (i dont do much landscapes-to hard to get a stunning one imho). its sharp as a razor and its not extortionate all things considered. and in a years time you wont want to sell it on ebay.
paulParticipantAh now, if you want a great walk around lens – 24-70mm f/2.8 L is a brilliant lens. Another option would be the 24-105mm f/4 IS L lens. High quality lens, to go with a high quality camera.
The 24-70mm lens is my general lens for my 40D.
scasMemberyep, agree with the 24-105l (i dont have one so i cant recommend it) but its meant to be 8 and a half out of ten
lahinch_lassParticipanthere’s another suggestion.. Tamron have an 18-250mm walkaround lens which seems to be getting rated pretty well on slrgear.com
particularly compared to it’s equivalents from Sigma.
So if you want a single lense to cover wide-angle to telephoto the Tamron is a decent budget option… or at least it’s one I’m considering getting.hopefully by next week I’ll have 2 seperate kits on the go.
I’m getting the Canon 40D with the 17-85mm IS USM kit lens. I have access to a Sigma 100-300mm F4 that I’ll be using with it.
And I’m getting the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 whenever my supplier gets back to me.Has anyone used the sigma teleconverter on a canon eos ? I’m hoping I can get the 1.4x teleconverter to use with the f2.8 lens.
On the tamron lens I will be ordering it for my Minolta to use for travel purposes, and backup to the Canon kit.
If anyone is travelling through the UK, Dixons taxfree have a pretty good deal on the Canon 40D kit at present – ?817 with the 17-85 lens which is working out about ?1100 (dependent on exchange rate)… that’s ?500 cheaper than the couple of shops I’ve checked here.
