Want to upgrade film camera

    Hi all,

I’m looking for a bit of advice as I’m hoping to upgrade my film cameras for christmas on a very tight budget. Hopefully this can be reasonably easily done since everyone seems to have gone digital these days.

I have an old Canon T70 with a pretty reasonable selection of FD lenses and a not quite so old, but old all the same Minolta Dynax 3xi. At the moment I’m using them for black and white film and colour film. What I don’t like about them is the Minolta autofocus drives me mad and manual focus with the drive is impossible! as soon as I get the focus I want, and stop moving the focus ring the motor doesn’t stop quickly enough and there you have it, out of focus again. Also since there are no markings for aperture, and no exposure compensation really its a bit of a pain in general. The T70 while I like the fact that I can go as manual as I like and the lenses have all the nice info I need on the rings and also in the viewfinder it doesn’t have the advantage of autofocus for those shots you just don’t have time to spend ages setting up for. The metering on it also isn’t great, but this is also possible due to my bad shooting. It’s also a bit annoying carrying them all around with me so I was hoping to replace them with one nicer newer camera with a few more modern bells and whistles!

I’d like to stick with canon as I hope next year to maybe go digital (drooling at the EOS 400D) for colour and keep film for black and white and was hoping to be able to use lenses on both cameras but this isn’t essential I know most the old lenses for film Canons aren’t very compatible with digital. I’ve seen a few second hand film SLR’s on the site for Conns and am generally keeping an eye out.

So after the epic (sorry), anybody any ideas or recommendations on what to go for? I was thinking of the EOS 3 but have never used it or heard too much about it these days as digital is all the rage.
Any advice would be appreciated. Also, anyone know if camera shops do trade ins?

    Thanks
    Sharon

Conns Cameras in Dublin always seem to habve a healthy supply of used film cameras in stock particularly Canon EOS gear. They do but I don’t imagine you will get much of a deal on your FD equipment if they will take it off you at all.
