Water Drops

Set up studio lights and had a couple hours of trying to catch the exact moment the drop bounced back with the flashes firing – plenty of duds but a couple of decent shots below – trying to get reflections of the different coloured backgrounds was interesting and next time i have a few hours to waste i think i’ll use a paint tray or something black rather than a see through glass dish as the edges highlighted much

The second one works better as the first one gets lost in the background. These aren’t as easy as they look, I tried a few times before eventually giving up. Coloured milkshake works well, with the colours.

    Hi JMac,

I really like the droplet in #1.

If the whitish highlights in the background weren’t there I
think it would be a cracker.

Looks difficult but probably a lot of fun.
Something to add to the “must try” list.

    Well done.

    John.

    Thanks guys

yeah it was bit of a fun for few hours – one of those things that once you start you keep going chasing the best damned water droplet  – like playing the slot machines – you know there is going to be a winner now in the next couple goes really

#1 the water drop and base are really sharp almost like a glass sculpture – the highlights in background unfortunately were caused by the rim of the glass dish getting splashed and relecting the strobe light – next time a black tray and fill with more water i think

#2 I like the colours in this and think it might look good printed large as an abstract type image – droplet isnt as interesting or sharp though :(

Both of these shots just seem too dark to be a representation of water shots.

one of the camera mags showed this as a project and what they did was sit a glass bowl in a white plastic one which made the water brighter and looked down on the drop at a slightly higher angle so the edge could not be seen.

I think they did some surface tension shout of petal with the same setup (I think)

    Nice website btw Gary

All you really need is a white background and place some lights over and beside a clear glass aquarium or bowl.
