    HI,
    Just went through my pics from the tall ships, found the following and decided to give it the black and white look.
    all commentaries welcome, thanks.

    Lovely, evocative black and white image. I think to finish it off and prepare it for print, you should work in removing some minor distractions like the chimneys and pylons in the background.

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for the comment.
    i still haven’t made my mind up about removing anything from the picture.
    to Waterford people, they probably would prefer to keep the chimneys in , as they belong to the area…
    in landscape photography i try to work with my surrounds, light , weather….. and power lines and chimneys, up to now i have tried no to remove stuff from my pictures.
    But, i do agree with you , the picture would be better without them.
    What do you do then?……
    any suggestions?

    I think that if man put something horrible in the landscape, then it is fine to remove it. Although, like yourself, I find it easier to just avoid things altogether.

    I prefer my landscape photographs to be as simple as possible, and I think it is acceptable to remove minor distractions. However, I am against composites, adding other skies etc etc.

    Hi Steve,
    I totally agree with your photography principles.
    some nice pictures on your website. i am planning to do a two/three day trip to nothern ireland sometimes in january, would you be able to give me a list of the “not to miss” landscape spots (causeway, waterfalls…). it would make my planning much easier in order to maximise my picture taking time, and make sure i make the most of it. i have never been there, but i know its beautifull. i wouldn’t want to be driving around missing all the good spots.
    cheers.

    No problem. Where will you be based?

    I don’t know yet, i will plan it precisely after christmas. probably three days. i haven’t really any idea of the scale of northern ireland, i know i won’t see everything in three days, but would like to get to the key spots, if i am lucky with the weather i could hopefully bring back a few good ones.
    I am based in county Clare, on the west coast, so it is quite a trip, but i am sure it will be worth it.

    I would recommend you focus on the north coast. The Mournes are nice, but are too far from the ‘famous’ locations to make it worthwhile during a short winter day.

    Bushmills or Portrush would be ideal as a base. There are plenty of B&B in Portrush, and small hotels in Bushmills. I recommend the Bushmills Inn if you fancy spending a little money and treating yourself.

    If you are spending 2 days there, you really have time to visit 4-6 locations.

    Day 1:

    Morning – Murlough Bay, County Antrim

    Afternoon – Dark Hedges, Armoy & the Ballintoy Elephant, County Antrim

    http://mountainsandwaves.com/photo13502588.html#photo” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

    Day 2:

    Morning – Portstewart Strand, County Londonderry & Benone Strand, County Londonderry

    http://mountainsandwaves.com/photo13502509.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

    Afternoon – Giant’s Causeway & Dunseverick Harbour, County Antrim

    I hope that helps you get started. Let me know if you have any questions.

    I feel your picture is fine as it is and I did’nt even notice the chimney or pylon until I read the post. Even then I had to look for them.

    Travelling all the way from Clare in January? I think you’d be better waiting until the clocks change and there’s more daylight. Try and fit in Mussenden Temple and the Bishop of Derry’s Palace near Downhill. Also, it’s not far from Derry to Grinan of Aileach in Donegal, well worth seeing. If you decide to visit the Mournes, not far away, Legananny Dolmen is worth a visit.

    Great image Celticpics, black & white works really well. I wouldn’t remove anything that is a fixture of the landscape as it helps to bring a scale to the scene. Great sky too.

    The only thing I can think would have improved the shot is if you had photographed the craft coming towards
    you instead of away. Lovely conversion and tones

    beautiful image celticpics. From my perspecive, i dont find the pylons and chimneys distracting. I love the contrast in the sky.
