Watermarks and Flickr

Hey guys, just wondering what your idea on this topic is?!

Would you ever bother watermarking a photograph that you put on the internet?? On a site such as Flickr or Pix.ie?
I know that resolutions can be reduced but with regards to sports photos is it advisable or not? It does affect the aesthetics I suppose but there is always the feeling that putting photographs on the internet leaves you open to these kind of issues!

I don’t see many watermarked pictures around. Some people seem to do it initially but then stop doing it or minimise the watermarks.
The photos are are on the web I guess to share them and watermarking can be distracting, especially effective watermarks.

If your photos are uploaded as low res then they can only be stolen as low res images.
But an image that a photo thief is looking at on their screen is already on their computer, and is trivial to steal.

Yeah I guess you are right. I think that they are distracting but I suppose it is trying to strike a balance between letting people view them and giving people the ability to reproduce the photo without credit etc. I was surprised when I put some photos on Fllickr only to see an album with them on somebodys Facebook photo album!

Also there are lots of privacy options on flickr, you can stop your photo being used in a blog (blogged from flickr), stop them being downloaded in large size if they were uploaded in large size, or searched for by Google, it’s all in the options. Worth a look through.

As far as I was aware the All Rights Reserved status of a photo restricted all this but maybe I was wrong! I will have another look at the options tonight; thanks for the advice Martin :)
