I was up at lough Dan yesterday and got snap happy walking/stumbling up through a river. I hope this is the right section for these shots, they were taken using my little samsung digital camera. I’ll put a few up now and maybe some more later. All comments welcome, I know I’m a newbie but don’t hold back on criticism, I need it to improve.

    Hi Jonathan,

Well done to you for getting out and making some photographs.
It’s a great way to get experience and find out about your gear and how to
make images that people will want to look at.

When I look at a photograph I wonder what the photographer is saying to me.
There’s a long list of possibilities.
Is it an interesting subject, an unusual and/or interesting occurance, a beautiful scene,
a tender moment, wonderful light ……….

    Now to your photographs.
They are not a bad set of images at all.
Bit of thought gone in to them I would say.

You have used a variety of processing tecniques so the don’t really
    hang together as a set.
I’d have been tempted to post them in individual posts.

#1 is probably a little on the abstract side of things.
Theres a nice flow to the water.
I’m not 100% convinced that the toning is entirely suitable.

#2 looks like the same scene as that showed in #1.
I don’t find it as attractive as #1.
There’s a lot of very dark areas and maybe you were a little
    bit close to it.
Tricky metering conditions and not easy to get right.

#3 is a nice scene and I think quite a good composition.
The conversion I feel lets it down a bit.
I’m not sure what the lighting conditions were like but it all
lacks a little contrast and bite.
Maybe it’s one where the colour version with the nice green of the
foliage contrasting with the rocks and water might have been
    a better option.
If you have a very good RAW or original Jpeg maybe you could revisit your
    conversion process.

#4 is again a nice scene but it demonstrates that to get the best photograph
from a given scene it needs to be photographed when lighting and sky conditions
    are suitable.
A clear blue sky is one of my favourite things on earth but is often not what is required
when trying to make a beautiful landscape photograph.
There is also a few very dark area in this photograph.
I also think the processing here is a little severe as the colours look a little unnatural to my eye.

I hope I have not been too critical as this is not my intention.

I look forward to seeing more of you images.

    Cheers.

    John.

Thanks John, you made some good points that I’ll keep in mind for next time. I have some more photos from that set that I’ll post as individual photos.

    Thanks again.

    3. Is very good, especially the balanced composition, in general such complicated scenes are not suitable for B&W photos but in this case I like the result and would like to see it as a large format print.
