Wedding: 17-85mm f4-5.6 VERSUS 24-105mm f/4L

    Hi all,

Have just found this forum and I’m looking forward to chatting and discussing photography with you..

Can anyone help me? I was wondering if you think the 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens will do for a wedding?

    I also have the standard 18 – 55 and 70 – 300 and I have a second body. I’m doing a wedding in Nerja and I don’t think I can afford the 24 – 105 lens.

Your thoughts are very much welcome :)

    If you decide to buy a €1000 lens, I suggest 24-70 f/2.8 instead of 24-105 f/4.

The 24-105 is will not give you a very usefull range on a 1.6 crop sensor. It will give you the equivalent of 38-168mm.
Since you mention a 17-85 lens I assume that you have this type of camera (ie. a 450D, 550D, 50D, 7D)
So while the 17-85 is not a brillant lens and does not have the optical quality of the 24-105, it is probably a more usefull option.
The quality should be more than adequate once you stop it down.
I imagine the light quality in Nerja should be more than adequate so you won’t have to play around too much with ISO and the like.
If thats the lens that you have already, then I’d stick with it and maybe pick up a 50mm 1.8.
The 50mm 1.8 is an inexpensive lens but is great for potraits on a 1.6 camera. It would also be ideal for indoor shots in low light.

I agree with that. You may be able to use it in the church without flash too.

That said, with no offence to the OP, I get the impression that perhaps technique may be more important than lens choice. knowing how to get the best out of existing equipment in the difficult environment of a dark church or a very bright day may be more critical in getting good shots. I have the 24-105, and it will not produce miracles.

If any money is to be spent, a good flash (say a 430EX or better) and the 50f1.8 as mentioned may be the better place to go. A 580EX and nifty fifty would be easily less than €500 by shopping around or buying secondhand. Even a 70-200mmf4L can be picked up for around €400 too and is great for impromptu shots.
