Wedding assistant for free

    Hi all,

I’m looking to build experience as a wedding photographer. To that end I am offering my services for free to be an assistant or second shooter for weddings. All I ask in return is a little mentoring. I’m 35, clean-cut, well-spoken and polite. The list of my camera gear is on my profile. I do have a little wedding experience already.
I’m in Dublin but can venture farther afield. Weekends ideal but not essential (I’m self employed)

Some of my work is at http://www.flickr.com/karlmartini or the link should be below if I’ve inserted the URL tags correctly. I also have some other wedding images which I cannot post for copyright reasons but which can be emailed.

    My phone number is 086-805-9782

Heya Karl, can’t offer you assisting to wedding work (not really my kettle of fish) but don’t offer your services for free?!?! You should always be paid for work that you do, that’s what I think anyway!

My goal is to get some experience rather than make money in the short-term. The fact that I am not charging doesn’t mean I don’t value my work either. I just want to hit the ground running and get as many weddings under my belt as possible. If I’m in demand half-way into the season and my shots feature in the albums regularly I would consider charging. The ultimate goal is to be a solo professional with a quality portfolio. When that happens I have no intentions on competing on price. If I need to stay out of town I would ask for expenses. I have no intentions unintentionally lowering the market price for photographers. Consider it a mini internship!

If you manage to get some assisting work and are doing it for the experience (free) make sure the photographer you are working for has got employers liability insurance.
Even if you assist for nothing they have to cover you in the event of an accident. Same applies to any photographer who ropes in a member of the public to assist, if they have an accident helping you, you must have employers liability to cover them. Even when no money changes hands.

Just a small point really, but an important consideration.

Thanks to all who replied and viewed my post. I have already recieved one offer to assist in mid february which I am very happy about. I’m still taking offers as I want to gett as much experience as possible. Phil…while PL insurance is nice I think it will only reduce the amount of offers I get. When I go solo I will need it though. ANy idea of cost?

Maybe a bit of a misunderstanding here, so roughly:

Public Liability will cover you (or your photographer “master”) for costs if you damage somebody else’s person/property.

Employer’s liability will cover costs (medical, compensation, etc) if something damages you while carrying out tasks for the photographer. In the UK, he is obliged to have EL.
