Trawling trough a load of shots from this evening – getting there slowly but surely.

    Hey Ali!

This is lovely…the satin almost shimmers it is so perfectly exposed. Plenty of detail in the gown and ribbon.

I am sure it looks more fabulous even larger.

Well done..your model has sophistication and youthfulness together. Great expression

    :D

Hope you plan on sharing more???

    I agree with Denverdoll.
    Now, what’s she holding?

The dress exposure is spot-on, great shimmer. Her positioning is fine, just a little bothered by the background, it doesn’t really add to the shot. The subject is great.

Im struggling with this one. If it was taken by a less experienced photographer, I would be saying things like “the background is very distracting; the tree is competing with the model; the little sign in the bottom corner could easily have been avoided with a step to the left; try not to cut off joints; use a larger aperture etc.” But as I know you are experienced, I obviously have to critique on the basis that all these things are deliberate and I’m telling my granny to suck eggs.

I have to say that I just dont think it works. The dress seems well exposed, and it is obviously the main subject, but it is simply too distracting overall.

I’d be with Ross on this one-
    pretty much all of it-
The lighting on the dress is fine,
but there seems to be quite a lot of spill on the tree.

    The immediate distraction for me when I opened it up was the catwalk pose;
I don’t think it suits the wedding dress niche at all,
even if it shows off the dress beautifully-

Maybe I’m just falling for stereotypes,
and I really don’t know the market,
but it just seems a bit brazen-

Excellent exposure on the dress Ali, really captured the
    whites perfectly.

As Simon said, the background isn’t ideal, though personally I think
that’s because it’s adding rather too much to the shot – your chosen depth
of field has that tree trunk and quite a bit of foliage almost in focus, which
is just competing with your model for attention (I am intrigued though by
that remnant of a quote or poem in the bottom right corner).

I know the image is supposed to be all about the dress, so the cropped
elbow and missing footwear spoils this just a little; if you’re going to show that much
of the dress, I really think you should show it, and the model, in entirety.

Regarding the model, I think her expression is a little hard in this one, so it
would be nice to see some more from the shoot. Also, the fingers of her left
hand seem to have been cut off by the ruffle – or whatever you call it – down the
side of the dress, with the exception of the extended middle finger, not the most
polite gesture on any side of the Atlantic ;)

I know I’ve gone on a bit, but overall I think you’ve done really well with this.
Hardly a simple task to photograph a wedding dress if only from the point of view
of getting the exposure right. Would love to see more from the session. Hope
they treated you well at Bellinter House…

Thanks a million all :) I have to say – i was a bit intimidated by a couple of things – the time of day i was shooting, the material of the dress, and my sb800 :D. I’m delighted with the exposure. I’m delighted with the shot, I suppose, women just look at the dress and that’s just it :). God! I hate being a girl! p&s, she’s holding a venetian mask :)
Brandyman, are you sure you don’t mean limbs :)? I’ve already chopped her knees off and her ankles :D

Excellent, good work Ali. Technicaly perfect, nicely exposed, beautifuly composed and posed. Love the colours and background. The only thing is facial expression a bit hard/tence. Great work anyway, top class.

Not one of your better shots to date, I fear.

If the intention was to show off the dress, then this certainly isn’t the shot to do it. You mentioned that there were more shots to come, so I’m hoping this was just a teaser and the images got better as you progressed through the shoot. I know my inital shots in any shoot are rarely any good; there always seems to be a bit of “warm-up” time required.

I think it’s mainly the background and the lighting that doesn’t do it for me. That, plus the fact that I can’t see all of the dress and it doesn’t seem to be fitting very well either (looks a little too big to me, but hey, what do I know about dress sizes!).

Thanks a mil Thorsten. Definitely not one of my better shots. How would you suggest lighting it? I’m not too great at the auld outdoor shooting stuff, would appreciate any advice.

Well, for starters, I’d say ditch the flash! (You did use flash, right?) Next, get your subject into open shade. Open shade is really any lighting that isn’t direct lighting (from the sky or sun overhead). It usually ends up being a lovely soft yet directional light and is ideally suited to capturing the fine detail such as you would fine in a wedding dress. I now try and adopt the concept of “Light first, location second.” After all, isn’t it more important to have great light on a subject rather than setting them in a great location with crappy light? :)

I can’t add anything else to what’s already been said, great shot …

I think the attitude the model achieves is great!

as an idea and forgive me here, but … the stance, attitude and your composition achieved would also look well if she was wearing riding gear? and what she’s holding could be a whip … tis all in the attitude :-) and of course the excellent composition and capture

    nice one.
    Dara.
