Wedding Images for DVD

Looking for a bit of guidance if anyone can assist.

At present I use proshow gold for dvds of proof images etc. for weddings. One couple have asked me to produce a dvd (along with music) of their shots as they had no videographer. The thing is, personally I don’t think the quality of the images on my “usual” dvds is that great, it looks fine and suits the purpose at present, but I’m not sure how it would look on a 42 inch plasma which is what hey have got.

Is there a certain setting in regard to DPI etc. that I should save the images at for optimal quality ?

There is probably a very simple answer to this, but I’m a bit of a technophobe and its definately something I need to address but I’m a bit busy at the moment with preparing for weddings, communions etc. and all the other non-photography work like tax returns etc.

Any pointers would be very gratefully received.

    Thanks & regards

I stand to be corrected on this (where are you Steve (stcstc)?) but if we assume “worst case” scenario of HDTV, then the standard for that is 1080p, or 1080 lines of vertical resolution in progressive scan, and usually a 16:9 aspect ratio. This creates a frame resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. So if you keep those figures in mind, you should have all scenarios covered. As far as DPI is concerned, you’re looking at somewhere in the region of 45 PPI.

    Cheers Thorsten,

will give that a shot and see how it works.

    ok here goes

if it gets too complex or anything pm me and will ring you to explain

Ignore the HDtv stuff, the dvds you will be making are whats called SD (standard definition same as normal TV). making HD dvd stuff is more complex and hardly anyone has players

all HDTV’s will basically scale up an SD input ie your dvd player to fit the HDTV screen

so your images need to be 768 *576 (square pixels ie out of photoshop)

but i guess proshow will take care of this for you

as far as PPI or DPI as its referred to in photoshop (DPI is actually irrelevant for screens its a print thing)

you need 96 PPI thats the defacto standard normally this equates to 72 dpi in photoshop.

But i guess again proshow will take care of this for you

the other option for a lot of this stuff is to try something like nero – it will make a slide show to music.

what you will find is that different software will produce slightly different results in terms of quality. this is becasue the encoder (the bit that converts the pictures to MPG video) is different. when i am making dvds for my clients i use different encoders based on what is in the video.

    Cheers for the feedback folks.

Have tried a few combinations but still not happy with the final output, perhaps proshow “dilutes” the quality of the files.
When done as a .pdf slideshow the images look perfect, but no matter what I do on proshow the quality is not great.

Perhaps I will give nero a try and see what happens.

    Thanks agin.

Might be no harm in trying Pictures to Exe as well. The trial version is somewhat limited but should give you an indication as to whether it will work for you or not. It does mean learning a whole new application though.

    Thanks Thorsten,

I googled my problem with proshow and found a few people had the same issues. Luckily on a couple of forums there were solutions posted and – hey presto – I just burned a dvd of images and the quality is way better. I’m a happy camper !

All I have to do now is find out where I can get songs etc. for including without breach of copyright ..

    Thanks again.

    Hi Phil,

sorry for the late response – been out of action for a while.

See attached link below which I found helped me. Hope it works for you.
The quality is still not what I would call exceptional – but way better than what it had been.

As this is my 1st post, it’s in relation to this subject as it is an avenue I have gone down recently.
I purchased the Ulead Video Studio 11.5 plus a couple of weeks ago and it is just amazing.
The quality of the finished article is top notch, and that’s watching it on a 42″ screen…..
It has amazing features, including the Rob Burns effects.
I have recently photographed a couple of weddings and put the photo’s into a dvd slide show with music,
and the couples have loved it. Roughly 150 photo’s, 3/4 songs and lasts about 12 – 15 minutes.
Without a doubt, a fantastic way for the couple and friends to see so many shots with their choice of music.
Takes a bit of time putting it all together, but the end result is amazing.

Did you consider muVee? I am using it and beside the fact that it is dead simple the results are outstanding. The program will adjust the slideshow based on the music you are using. Did one a couple of weeks ago for a friend with portraits and snap-shots of her daughter and I had her in tears at the end :). Tears of joy and happiness. Give it a try. You wont regret.
