Ross has the wet lands where there should be plenty of bird life. However good lens are required as the birds tend to be shy and to stay well out of 300mm range!. There was green shank, red shank, oystercatchers, heron and plenty of swans and gulls the last time I stopped off there.
NualaZoundzMemberSorry missed those posts
Thanks for offer of lift – would love to go to Glengariff – so once again am happy wherever we go, provided I can get a lift :D
Ross – well, what’s not to love – for those who aren’t so into nature, there’s some gorgeous landscapes on the clifftops, lovely views of Galleyhead etc. There’s the churches, which are gorgeous, and yes there’s the wildlife, but you’re also close to many other wonderful places to visit, such as Galley Head, Kilkeran Lake and woods (which are gorgeous), Castlefreke, Drombeg Stone Circle, Rathbarry, then there’s Clonakilty, Gladore, Myross and Union Hall (a bit further out)… There’s plenty for even those who’re not so interested in bird photography. Also in Ross we have our lovely resident otter, who occasionally makes an appearance – and he’s gorgeous! I’d love to see him again since I got the 500mm lens, as the photos I got with the 200 were pretty dire.
Within a walk of Ross itself there’s plenty of things to see anyway! :)
I suppose I partly love it because I live here, but I’ve always loved it – even before we moved here, I visited several times a year from the UK, from the age of about 9! :) There’s so much to see, and it’s just lovely! Sound like a tourist brochure now
Hope that’s helpful? :)
ETA – also, re. above post – frequently you can get fairly close to the birds, I got some not bad shots of Black Tailed Godwit with a 200mm lens :) though a 500mm helps no end. We do get all sorts of fab birds on the lagoon and estuary – it’s a shame it’s the wrong time of year really – we must do a meet up in winter, as this winter gone I saw greylag, goldeneye, shoveler, teal, whimbrel, curlew, black tailed godwit, redshank, greenshank, red breasted merganser, shelduck, kingfisher (though they’re always there)… and loads more! It really is a bird paradise.

LulaParticipantSorry I sounded so dull about Ross but I usually just drive by en route to Cork!!!
mandParticipantIf anybody is driving through Dunmanway i would love a lift. The first bus won’t get me to Glengarriff till 11.45am.

Not at all! I just thought I’d add to it, because I do spend a rather silly amount of time there, and love it so much!

Since there will be several folks staying overnight, we might be able to do Glen on the Sat. and Ross on the Sunday.
Anyway, as I said let’s make sure we are available for that weekend – and we’ll decide at the end of July the details – and remember,
transport wil be available (inc. Dunmanway)looking forward to it! :D

Consider you bed booked Steve, and no advance monies needed.
