I’m thinking of investing in a decent tripod for mainly landscape’s and would appreciate any help on what type of head would be best i.e. pan & tilt or ballhead :?: :?:

What do you use and on what tripod

    :?:

    I have the Manfrotto 322 RC2 ballhead on a Manfrotto 055B tripod.

    A brilliant combination.

Get yourself a decent ball head, you won’t regret it, particularly if you’re doing landscape. Most people tend to economise when it comes to a head but it’s just as important an element as the actual legs are. I have a Manfrotto 468 RC2 which is no longer made but still available from a place like Mr. Cad or College Cameras. It’s not in the same league as an Arca-Swiss or Markins ball head but then again it’s not as expensive either (GBP 130.00-150.00).

There’s an excellent write up on different ball heads here: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/ballhead/

I also have a 410 Junior Geared head. It’s a slow head to use but ideal if you want to make very small adjustments to the camera positioning.

I can only talk about my tripod head, which is a Giottos MH-1000 ballhead. If you’re not using long lenses, it’s fine, but I wouldn’t use it with more than a 300mm lens. It has a handicap, it tends to tilt just a little bit after you set it to the required position. I got used to the operation, but it’s very annoying… and I know that the next one will be at least a ?300 head. Ballheads tend to be smaller and lighter, which is important if you are trekking with your stuff a lot. If you want to do any panorama work, I would not recommend the ballheads.

Well I have the same set up as Paul and I fine it very good and light enough to bring anywhere.
The 332 rc is so handy for quick movement and good locking.

Ball head is definitely the way to go. I use a Manfrotto 488RC4 on my main tripod, and a 486RC2 on my spare. Both are excellent heads. The 488 will take a heavier load than the 486, which is the only reason I upgraded.

I recently invested in a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod + 486RC2 ball head and I have to say I find them very, very good indeed. The ball head allows me to get the camera in position very, very quickly and easily.

I purchased from these guys in Germany who I can highly recommend as being very well priced with good service:

Hi Steve, My Recommended head is normally the 322 Joystick head as it is so quick to use. If you are doing landscapes and especially panoramas then any head with a Ball and socket is NOT likely to be user friendly and when you loosen it all movements can change. For Landscape I would go with a three way head like the Manfrotto 804RC2 (http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/4432?livid=80|81&idx=82 ) or the 460MG ( http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/2332?livid=80|81&idx=82 ). Both the Manfrotto 190 and 055 Series (X-Pro especially) are superb. For General photography the 055 is a better all-round bet, but if you are hiking to do your Landscapes the lighter 190 is much more practical. We stock both, drop me a line if you are interested.

the 190 head is the one for macro as well?
I am really interested but I don’t know exactly how does it works!!!

    thanks!

    Hi Gizzo,
The 190 is the tripod itself (legs – without head), but the new 190 X-Pro’s column can be easily turned to the Horizontal position, so it is a real aid to Macro work. Hope this helps.
