Portstewart, St Patrick’s Day, other half holding on to me as gale force winds and sea spray battered and soaked me from the right (I’m not exaggerating – I was inches away from the Atlantic and I only weigh 8 stone – ish). So, in an effort to learn how to use the D40X , these were taken with my point-and-shoot compact – WHAT IF I had had my slr – what could I have done, settings wise, to make these shots better? (Apologies for the way I upload and the necessity of having to click on them – it’s the only way I know how to at the moment.)

Welcome Esmie and fair dues for standing in gale force winds for the shot, the plight of the photographer eh..

In the 1st shot, there is an area of cloud in the top right that seems blown out, a quicker shutter speed would have avoided this over-exposure. It also seems to lack a single point of focus, the pier from the right, the peninsula from the left, both interesting but they tend to detract from the image when both are in the frame. Plus there is a wall or railing in the foreground which is a little distracting.

In the 2nd picture I would have zoomed in on the peninsula with the castle on it to include a little less foreground and quite a lot less sky, Maybe moved a little to the right if that was possible to level out the peninsula.

Both pictures have potential so dont think its all negative, plus Im new to photography also so take this with a pinch of salt

Im sure you will get much better advice.
Well done on the shots and keep sharing!

I like the black and white I think it really sets it off as well, and what’s a gale force wind to stop an intrepid photographer from taking a picture.

I am with alzaphod on this, I think its a composition issue, in that there are several very exciting subjects fight for my attention. I love the rough seas, the coast line, the sea spray. It really says alot about the area and the conditions. Problem is it tells TO much.

Have a clear subject, focus on that one subject to make it stand out have a theme and keep simple.

    :D
