LoGillParticipant
So… here’s where my general train of through is going … I get the banter and amusing links and all the other iinterest sharing stuff that goes on in this area… and thats great !
BUT ….
How about everytime you comment on a thread here in general chat …. that you then go and post critique, questions etc in the Critique Forums or somewhere else on the site …. spread the love and get the forums popping … go crazy !

jb7ParticipantLiam2673ParticipantIn theory I agree but I think in practice people do what they want to do and what they like to do, so maybe its better to just accept that. I’d be of the view that site participants should put more effort into critique. Some do, some don’t. But thats just my view.

But I do that already Lorraine…
you get a gold star ;)

I’m not trying to instill some crazy critique criteria – just a bit of awareness really.. i notice alot of images with no feedback and think its discouraging to the poster – personally I’ve had tonnes of help and advice on images from this site – and appreciate sometimes its repetitive to offer, but feel its so valuable to receive .. so just now and then make a concious effort .. that kind of thig ?

MartinParticipantI don’t use PI as much as i used to if I am being honest, don’t get a great deal of info that helps me with photography anymore with the exception of the film photography groups…
I think the General Chat areas is too active. I think some people use PI just for the General Chat area and for the crack. They do allot of talking but don’t do a great deal of picture taking in my opinion…
I would like to see more photography related discussions etc rather than the boring rubbish that is talked about in the General Chat area… How about closing the general char area for a month

Careful now!
jb7ParticipantQuite a few of the people who turn up in this section do comment on pictures-
recently there have been people complaining about receiving no comments-There are a number of reasons for this,
all gone over numerous times.I haven’t posted many pictures recently,
but with a few exceptions, I find it is the same people who usually offer a comment on my pictures-
without them, I’d have very few comments at all. Some people only post pictures, and the only comments they make are in reply to comments on their pictures-
Some complain about this place being cliquey after only a few posts, and without even commenting on others at all.
I think that the people who complain the most have never left me a comment. It’s good to exercise the critical part of your brain, but it does get repetitive,
and there are only so many times you can write the same sort of things-
also, as I’ve mentioned before, usually it’s a comment, rather than critique,
and it’s an opinion, often based on some form of a prejudice, that gets expressed.
Even if it sounds like the Gospel is being preached.Speaking for myself only, you understand.
I have no problem with General Chat, some topics are interesting, others I ignore.
This is a fairly active Irish based group, there are others, but they’re restrictive and nothing much happens there.
As far as I can see. There are a broad range of interests expressed here,
but if I want to have a specific conversation on my own personal interests,
I might have to go somewhere else,
rather than boring the people here.Calling for the general Chat section to be closed, by posting in the general Chat section,
just shows wha sort of a logic free zone it can be,
and that’s part of the attraction-Careful now!
Quite right Zoltan-
Down with this sort of thing…

LoGillParticipantDon’t get me wrong – I think banter and threads in general chat can be hilarious.. and its an important feature of the site
I agree with many of your points JB – people just posting and dissapearing and the general repetitve nature of certain critique . I also agree that this site does have a strong presence and offers a great friendly touch and really works hard to provide a good site for its members (kudos to Mark and Steve)-
I think a little prod to participate in other parts of PhotographyIreland.com and help the site move to a new level .. for instance – perhaps ts time to collect the common mistakes and repetitive critique offered and put it together in an artciles .. kind of like the stickies dotted around the place .. my original post was as a little poke to remind those who aren’t as active outside of the social threads – to maybe have a dip in now and then … and pointing the finger squarely at myself – vice versa – ;) .. and we all know who we are :)
Dunno – thinking as I go here ;)
LMr.HParticipantFor some reason this reminds me of a famous quote from a sporting commentator… ‘I went to a brawl and an ice hockey match broke out’. If we aren’t careful we may get a photography chat going here one day.
I agree with the sentiment Lorraine and am definately guilty as charged here. I am struggling to get out with the camera these days and so I rarely post for critique any more. I therefore feel a bit hypocritical critiquing everyone else’s work without offering any of my own work up.
However your point is noted and you can attach a ‘must try harder’ to me alongside jb’s gold star.
aoluainParticipantHi Lorraine,
I think you have touched on something which is a bit of
an undercurrent feeling through PI.I think a lot of members are probably wondering about the
other members using the GENERAL CHAT section and why
it seems they dont venture into the critique sections and that
this section can be clikkey but I think its just
a perception, you have to get stuck in with the general chat/banter/craic
not that I am accepted now or anything  .This issue has been raised in some form before.
https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=25448&highlight=critical
I know there are regular members in the general chat section
who have offered valuable critique on my images and for the most part I dont get
many replies on them, Im not too pushed either. It is just not going to happen where every active member is going to comment on
all images all of the time. Different members are going to take and use different acpects of
the forum and thats just the way its going to be.I find that there are weeks where I dont offer much critique and then there are weeks
where I leave quite a bit, it goes in waves.. . . ok Im gonna stop, Im just wondering is anybody going to read my long winded post ??? :)
5faytheParticipantHi Lorraine,
I am relatively new to this site & I must say I have found a lot to
interest me here.Discussions in the general chat can often be interesting to follow &
while some threads are of the humerous variety quite a number of
serious topics have been aired.I gave the following reply to a fellow Wexford CC member who posted
a comment (Meant humerously as it turned out) re lack of replies to one
of his posts.Sometimes when I view an image I am immediately moved to reply
Sometimes when I view an image I feel I have nothing immediately to say
that would that would be constructive. If the image sticks in my mind I will
come back again. If the image moves me then in some way I will reply. I would rather
adopt this style than reply to a lot of posts even if I have nothing to say.Of course sometimes what I am thinking has already been said by another member.
I would’nt like to see quotas imposed. Might get a lot of posting for posting sake.
The “little poke” is fine & might generate more participation but I am of the opinion that
people do what they do most times.I also understand that longstanding members who have posted & advised a lot would feel
that the whole thing has got repetative for them. But there are probably a lot of members
on here who are being commented on for the 1st time & appreciate the help.I have read back through an enormous amount of the old posts since I joined & there is a lot
of advice, discussion and entertainment in those threads.I tend to do a search if I have a question (to see if it’s been answered before) but I suppose
it’s just easier to just ask the question.Like a lot of replies on this site, it’s just an opinion.
John.
BTW Alan I read all your post and most interesting it is too.
nfl-fanParticipantHere’s what jb said.. only without the class & style
I’ve a pain in me hole writing critiques… I’ve written thousands. I’ve written guides. I’ve assisted people via PMs. I’ve encourage people new to photography. I’ve sent people equipment odds & ends. I know I’ve given more than I’ve taken from this site… but I’ll only ever be remembered for argueing with Randy & Michael. Best be remembered for something rather than nothing I say.
I’ve a pain in me hole talking about photography all the time… I just prefer to do it these days.
I’m certainly not a person who doesn’t do a great deal of picture talking… every spare minute God sends me is with the camera these days.
Martin – Do you not feel that having been involved with photography for so long now that maybe you’re in a position where you can only expect to get less back from the site? The site can only give people with your amount of experience so much back. I think someone with your amount of experience shouldn’t complain about what you’re not getting from the site and perhaps use your knowledge to put stuff back in. That’s not to say you don’t put anything in, you do.
I like the characters on the site, I like the banter, I’ve no problem with General Chat, it’s probably the place where we develop friendships in so far as they can go over the internet. If all I had to do here was critique photos and answer questions then I’d be off.
We had a similar discussion a while back and I’ll quote PeteTheBloke who summed it up perfectly –
There are plenty of pics going up all the time.
There seems to be plenty of critique.
Photography trips are being arranged.
Exposure is being discussed.
Competitions are being entered.
And votes are being cast.If chatting about some other stuff stops people getting bored
and keeps them returning, there’s no harm in that.I rarely see a quesiton go un-answered. There is always someone willing to help another with whatever it might be. We’ve all had 0 comment posts… and there’s a reason for it… the pics are usually naff… or just don’t invoke any sort of thought within the viewer.
I’m a major contributor in the General Chat forum… and if anyone wants to hold that against me then it’ll be their cross to bear and not mine.
Personally I think the issue might be that people can’t ignore General Chat… even if they want to.
Viva la General Chat!
nfl-fanParticipantI might add that I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head who regularly posts in General Chat but doesn’t make contributions throughout the site… but I could list maybe 10 member names that post questions and images for critique on a regular basis that rarely or never offer anything back.
