What is a Holga…

FlipflipParticipant
Well when you buy from Lomography like I did, they actually give you a roll of tape with the camera. So I guess ill just be using that.
I ordered the Deluxe kit so I get a filter set with it too, but I dont know how much use Ill get out of them realistically. But they look handy enough all the same so Im not gonna say no.
I spent most of last night reading up on them so I think I have a pretty good idea of common practice now but the whole point seems to be about your own style so i guess Ill just have to mess around with it myself!
Thanks alot for all the advice too guys, ye’ve been great!
jb7ParticipantLoads of great pictures in this thread now-
Quite a lot of single images that deserve to be posted in their own threads really, IMO.Maybe, in that case, we could see them a little bit bigger too-
Just a suggestion-

How about a special Toy Camera section in the Critique Forum,
dedicated specifically to all pictures produced like this?JohnnyMcMillanParticipantTaken from roll of Ilford XP2….first roll processed C-41 and have to say I’m pretty happy. Tis late now, so can only put this one up, taken on Bray Seafront. Will post up some more tomorrow, tomorrow, there’s always tomorrow, it’s only a day away…

That Bray picture is brilliant and really shows off the characteristics of the Holga. A classic.
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantEddieParticipantJohnny,
The Bray seafront image is superb. It was made for the Holga. Its great when you get a cracking timeless image from piece of plastic junk. I like the other one’s but the Bray seafront is just my style of image. I print traditionally but have never had great success with XP2 type negatives, hope you are going to produce a print from that one. If you have any trouble give me a mail and i can try print it traditionally for you. Also keep an eye on Lightleaks for a submission request that suits that image.

EddieParticipantI am delighted that we have a few photographers interested in the Toy camera scene now and this thread is getting lots of viewers. Hopefully we can get a few more photographers on board next year. Maybe next year we can have an exhibition somewhere and increase awareness.
PS.
Any female Toy camera users on board yet . Some of the links at the bottom of my blog are Toy camera users. Some even make their own lenses. My favourite is Susan Burnstine, her work is amazing. Do have a look at the work it’s really inspiring. There is Holga show on here for a bit more inspiration.
http://www.photomediacenter.org/Holgashow/holgashowhome.htmllightladyParticipantI find the Holga pictures amazing; however, I’m not really familiar with results from 120 film, is that what they call medium-format? I wonder if part of the amazong thing, therefore, is the look of prints from 120 film?
Let’s face it, the variety available in film cameras of all sorts far surpasses digital. Ok, in my opinion :)LumpyParticipanti LOVE that bray shot Johnny, great stuff. I’m expecting my Holga any day now from Hong Kong, can’t wait.

Ok, in my opinion :)Most 120 films are available in 35mm also, so the look is more down to the plastic lens in the camera. I do agree with you the look is fantastic and these guys are great photoraphers and quite an advert for Holgas. Are you have a bash yourself?

I love the look, but I had one and hated the film advance, accidental double exposures and overlapping frames. I’m on the lookout for a Holgaesque camera with better film advance.
I’m quoting myself on this one, I said I hated the overlapping frames, since I posted this I’ve been looking at the various holga sites and I’ve found that I didnt do everything possible to tighten the film. Meetinks I’ll give ’em another go in the new year.
FlipflipParticipantI got my first roll developed the other day.
To say the least, it was pretty bad.
I got two good shots that I’ll upload soon.
But I learned from my mistakes and I got some more film yesterday so Ill have more soon!
MarkKeymasterI agree with JB, post some of these in the critique forums. They’ll get
missed by some of the members in here. Some are worth seeing by others,
so don’t deprive them :)Mark
