any advice greatly appreciated
have the ef-s 18-55 is kit also sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6DG macro
and from my old canon eos 650 film camera a canon zoom lens ef 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 II and a canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 II
with a speedlite 430EZ
are these any good for me on my new camera?apologies for ignorance but all new to me
many thanks
JonpositronMemberI am no expert, but you already have the cheap and best solution – your Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 II.
If you can’t or don’t want to use flash and yet want to shoot dark / stage , you need something that let’s in as much light as possible. May be a 50mm 1.4?
thalpinMemberI’d also say the 50mm 1.8 would be the ideal lens to bring unless you are fairly far from the stage/performers. Using that at its wider apertures along with ISO400 or 800 should give you a chance of a good exposure – chances are also that spot or partial metering would be suitable (to prevent underexposure when strong lighting is in-frame and to prevent overexposure when performers are more isolated/lit with dark backgrounds etc)
jonwrightParticipantlads thanks so much for the advice really appreciate it will try the old 50mm out,its a small venue, don’t think i can really afford 1.4 yet, someone told me to get an 85mm that it would be better????oh the confusion of it all!!! :)
Heading to Cork nxt monday for couple of days might see if there any second hand camera shop there, aslo saw this for sale and wondered would it be any good for what I’d be shooting?appreciate any feedback Canon Fit, Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 for €230
JonjonwrightParticipantthalpinMemberdenis mcsweeney’s on oliver plunkett st., have a selection of second-hand lenses in-store you could browse through. The main drawback with that Sigma you mentioned is that at the telephoto end (50-70 for instance) the maximum aperture would be 4.0 or 4.5 which under the same lighting as your 50mm 1.8 would require a shutter speed 4 or 5 times slower (or an ISO 4 or 5 times higher) just to give you an idea of the performance difference in low light.
jonwrightParticipantthanks for that will check them out monday and i’ll leave the sigma alone.thanks
JonjonwrightParticipantanother question,I’m hoping to do some shots of the upcoming rally of the lakes and also some shots of local festivals where they have parades on the streets what recommendations for lenses would you have?
Thanks
Jon
