What lens should i get
-
JAMBOMACParticipant
Hello everybody new to this forum and photography in general got a canon dslr EOS 550D and the spec 18-135 lens. my question is what would be a good lens to get for wildlife like birds and of course deer in the phoenix park and a good macro as i keep marine fish as well.
here’s a link to a few pics,

shutterbugParticipantWelcome to the site! A natural progression down the lens route seems
to be a 70-300 I have owned the Sigma version and if you manage to get
your hands on a good one, they are excellent. They also have a “macro”
facility on them, you can pick them up fairly cheaply second-hand and
they are not madly expensive new.lochdaraParticipantHi Guys,
I hope ya dont mind me tagging on to this thread..
I just make the jump from A Canon G12 to Canon 1100d.
I looking at my future shopping list.My interests lie in macro and landscape photography. I may start into portrait a little too.
Night photography is a favorite. I like sports too but wouldn’t do much in that area.I was thinking of the 50mm 2.8 to start off because its good value. What progression would be good after that.
I see some 70-300 lenses going very reasonable. What are these like?Any suggestions.
jodal1975Participanthi jambomac…welcome to the site. really what you describe would require 2 lenses . one dedicated macro and a super zoom but if money only allows for one i would probably agree with jenny . the sigma 70-300 has a good length and focuses closer that other lenses of that range…i dont think it is full macro though . i would guess it is 2/1 rather than 1/1.
jodal1975Participanthi lochdara . again i would say that really what you require is more than one lens because landscape requires a wide angle lens and macro ,
well ..requires a macro lens :-) again its all about money so go with what you can afford . its the 50mm 1.8 you want by the way its only e100 .
i have one and along with it i have the 15-85mm , which serves as my wide(ish)angle for landscape, portrait lens and just everyday walk about lens coupled with that i have the cheapo 55-250 , which i hope to upgrade to 70-200 plus 1.4 extender someday :-( . saying that its image quality is good for the price but it is slow to focus , hunts alot and doesnt have full time manual overide. none of these are any good for macro though.lochdaraParticipantHi Jodal1975,
Im about to order a 50mm 1.8II soon.
The macro i was thinking of is a 100mm 2,8 in a few months
The zoom im not sure about.. which is a better option 70-300 or a 55-250 or something different..
Its for sports and times when i need a little more zoom. I missed some great shots at the kite surfing in Duncannon this year.Thankd
JAMBOMACParticipantThanks shutterbug and jodal for advice thinking about 100mm-400mm l series lens and probably an extender at some point
and as for macro the Canon EF 65mm F2.8 1-5X MP-E Macro Lens probably later on as it seems to me as the best possible
macro could be wrong though.shutterbugParticipantI have the Sigma 105mm macro, super lens and gives you a little more
reach than a 60mm would, you wouldnt have to get super close and frighten
the little critters away! Nice portrait lens too :)
