What next…help for a beginner

Hello all,
My DSLR(Canon EOS 1100D with the kit lens) just arrived and I’m having great fun with it already… :)
I can’t say which line of photography I want to aim at yet I want to try them all…
I’ve made contact with my local camera club(Waterford Camera Club) meeting on the 6th of Jan :)
I’m just wondering what are the essential pieces of kit I’ll need?
1 Camera Bag….is under the Christmas Tree (pressie from the kids)
2 Tripod…I have one my bro in law gave to me but its a cheapo and I’ll upgrade to one of the better ones(Slik or Monfrotto).
Now I’ll hand it over to the people with the knowledge of such things, I’m thinking lenses, filters and a remote shutter release.
What have I missed and any advice will be greatly appreciated.Cheers
GeorgeSeaviewParticipantHi George and welcome to PI.
Your in really safe hands with the lads in Waterford, some are members here also. You’ll be producing master pieces in no time. I use the online shop below for my accessories and find them great, very competitive, good quality and fast delivery. I would put a remote shutter release top of your list of items you need next. A cable release which I use will cost you about €20.
Your location is also an added bonus with the Comeragh mountains to the North and the Copper coast to the south.

PortlawslimMemberThanks for advice Dave,
Yeah lots of beautiful spots around the Waterford area and where I’m living(Portlaw) there’s lots of great locations and hopefully I’ll be showing them on here in the near future.Cheers
GeorgeAnonymousParticipantHi George,
As a relative new photographer I would suggest UV filters for your lens. I would also suggest a polarizing filter.
If you’re purchasing a lens get the hood also!
I wouldn’t be in to much of a mad rush to go out & purchase what you may ‘think’ you need but I would
wait until you find your feet, discover what interests you & you’ll know then what to purchase.
Also don’t be afraid to ask questions!PortlawslimMemberThanks John,
I agree it’s a much to expensive a hobby to just rush out and buy everything on your wishlist. I was looking at a set of filters and a hood so I’m on the right track anyway :DCheers
GeorgeDPSParticipantHi George UV filters are a must just to help protect your lenses.
If your thinking of a new lens try the 50mm f1.8. Its a great lens that wont break the bank.
THe quality of the images you get from hte 50mm will be better than those from your kit lens,
plus further down the line should you decide to upgrade the 50mm will fit not only your camera but also full frame canon cameras.
Best of luck with your photography and merry christmas.
